What to Know
Is there a more hot-button (but harmless…mostly) topic in motherhood than baby names? Everyone has an opinion, and what one mom likes, another may hate. And there are plenty of…unique…baby names out there these days. But the name one mom settled on is going viral—for all the wrong reasons.
Kay Loryn, a teenager and self-described “vegan, crunchy mom” shared a video explaining that she not only attempted to give birth in a river. Unfortunately, she ended up needing medical intervention at an actual hospital, not a beaver dam, but she named her daughter after a food.
And not just any food—a small, oily one.
“In the viral post, which has amassed over 5.3 million views, the mom explained how she landed on the name after a whirlwind birth. She says in the video: “Y’all are wondering if my baby is okay after I gave birth in a river and was rushed to the hospital.
And the winning name is…
She switches the camera angle to show the baby girl in her arms.
“She is! We named her Sardine,” she concludes.
Yep. Sardine. Pronounced exactly the way it’s supposed to be pronounced—like the tiny, slimy little fish. Naturally, the comments section lit up like a Christmas tree with remarks and opinions.
“If my parents named me sardine, I would have filed for emancipation the moment I turned 14,” one person said.
“Mind u, sardine is not freshwater fish,” someone else pointed out, referring to the river birth.
“There so many other marine species that you can name her after yet you choose SARDINE??” said another.
“Have you ever thought that the name will be a disaster for her later in school? I mean, do you think that in the future her name will become a joke for her friends?” One commenter shared.
And the thing is, they’re not wrong.
Kids can pretty much take any name in existence and find something to make fun of from it. Sardine is just low-hanging fruit, really.
Loryn doubles down on her name choice in follow-up videos, convincing viewers that her daughter “loves” her name, which she says she chose because she “used to love sardine sandwiches.”
Some viewers and commenters aren’t convinced the mom’s account is real, many saying it “has” to be satire. While we can’t know for sure, one thing is clear: this mom doesn’t GAF. At all.
