What to Know
Expensive groceries are the bane of many Americans’ existence right now. Well, that and gas prices. And climate change. And political leaders not having their best interest in mind. But getting back to the grocery matter, it’s no secret that inflation, or “shrinkflation,” has led to the overall cost of groceries growing exponentially. And one user on X shared a receipt from a 2006 grocery haul that their Mom bought at Walmart.
These days, you’re lucky if you make it out of the big box store without spending more than $200. But back then, it was a simpler time. Well, maybe not totally simple, and sure there were political, social, and economical issues of the time. But the grocery order in the X post shows just how different food and other necessities cost 20 years ago.
Groceries were painfully cheaper 20 years ago.

The photo in the X post shows a total of 79 items purchased at Walmart. The total came to $161.87. The grocery items in the receipt range from salmon to lunch meat to cereal and produce. It’s your typical list of essentials when it comes to grocery shopping. Except, in this case, it is so much more affordable than what people deal with today. At this point, we’re all “crying in recession.”
When other X users got a look at the receipt, most were in agreement that the cost of the individual items and the total cost for the grocery order are depressingly different from grocery costs today.
“Literally just sat here with my auntie and grandma reading everything and we all mad all over again,” one user commented on the X post.
“$161 for 79 items and there’s salmon, shrimp, wings, cereal, soda, produce, snacks AND meat on there,” someone else wrote. “This receipt feels more like evidence from a lost civilization.”
Another added, “People keep saying ‘money can’t buy happiness,’ meanwhile groceries now cost emotional stability.”
Buying groceries for a family of four is just depressing now.

Once upon a time, you might have been able to spend around $150 per week while shopping frugally, but not ridiculously, for groceries each week. That would be enough for a family of four. Now, you’re lucky if you get away with spending that at one store and then spending close to it at another store for the rest of your family’s needs. As kids grow up the amount of food they need also increases, sure but that does not account for the rising cost in individual grocery items.
Someone commented on the X post to say, “I stopped after the first couple of lines. Under $2 for a box of cereal and $2 for a bag of chips. We used to be a proper country!”
Another pointed out, “You can sit $160 worth of groceries in the front seat now.”
It’s not just Walmart, either.

The X post is from Walmart, but all grocery hails from all stores seem to have increased in total cost whether you like it or not. Some produce may be seasonal and, therefore, cheaper during some seasons than others. But that does account for individual items like bread or cheese or even fresh meat being so much more expensive individually.
That adds up. Not to mention getting less for more money. As a mom who bought goldfish crackers for years, I even emailed the company when the cost went up and the box changed from 30 ounces to 27.3 ounces. The response I got wS basically, “Lol sorry, but thanks for continuing to buy our product because you have no choice.”
