After Three Devastating Miscarriages, Mom Becomes Pregnant with Twins — One Week Apart

For Cara and Blake Winhold, of North Richland Hills, Texas, growing their small family had always been important to them. The couple began by welcoming a son named Wyatt in 2018, but giving him a younger sibling ultimately proved harder than they ever expected. According to The New York Post, the Winholds suffered three difficult miscarriages in the years that followed, until they finally became pregnant again in February 2021. But at their second prenatal appointment, they were stunned to learn they were having not just one but two babies — conceived at separate times.

The Winholds' incredible story is just now making headlines across the world

Part of the reason it's gripped readers is the fact that their journey to this point has been so unexpected — and, sadly, very traumatic.

After the birth of Wyatt, the couple lost two pregnancies and experienced another upsetting, and this time near-fatal, miscarriage in 2020.

"I called the doctor and told them what was happening and it didn’t seem normal," Cara later recalled to SWNS. "My husband was like, 'You need to go to the hospital,’ and by the time I went in, my blood pressure was really low."

Eventually, she blacked out, but doctors later told her that the baby was physically stuck in her cervix.

“I was bleeding out," she recently recalled, adding that doctors said "if I would have stayed home for maybe 30 more minutes, I would have died."

The young mom was saved by two emergency blood transfusions

That said, the harrowing experience left her suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and made her terrified to try to conceive again.

“I was scared to get pregnant again," Cara admitted to the outlet. "[But] I knew I wanted more kids."

And so, she and Blake once again relied on faith, hope, and love to see them through.

"I’m very optimistic, and I was like, ‘It’s going to happen,’ and I knew it was part of my journey and life to be a mom, and so I knew I didn’t want to give up," she said … "but going to therapy made me learn how to heal and understand that it wasn’t my fault. It took a lot of time."

To their surprise, they soon found themselves pregnant again

But they never could have anticipated what happened next …

In February 2021, a doctor confirmed that the Winholds were in fact expecting another bundle of joy. But during their follow-up appointment in March, they were stunned to learn that there were actually two bundles of joy in there.

It wasn't because the second baby was overlooked on the ultrasound

In fact, there wasn't any "mistake" or oversight involved at all.

Instead, Cara and Blake considered what happened to be their very own miracle.

Incredibly, Cara's doctors concluded that she must have ovulated twice within the same week, causing her to conceive her babies at two separate times.

Believe it or not, this is definitely a "thing"

It happens due to something known as superfetation — a rare and yet very real situation that happens when a second, new pregnancy occurs during an initial pregnancy.

According to Healthline, "another ovum (egg) is fertilized by sperm and implanted in the womb days or weeks later than the first one." As a result, "babies born from superfetation are often considered twins since they may be born during the same birth on the same day."

(Pretty wild, huh?)

Last year, the phenomenon made headlines when a couple from Wiltshire, England, welcomed their "super twins", Noah and Rosalie, who were conceived a full three weeks apart.

In March 2022, another mom named Charlotte (aka @tamingtriplets) went viral on TikTok for sharing that she became pregnant with a third baby while already pregnant with twins!

The Winholds are now sharing their story on TikTok, too

"After losing three babies, you will always be my favorite surprise," Cara captioned one recent video of her twins, who arrived on October 25, 2021.

First came Colson at 4 a.m., and next came Cayden — just six minutes later.

Today, Cara is more than happy to be a forever #BoyMom

She also feels that her "miracle twins" were the universe's special way of blessing her after experiencing so much tragedy.

"All I have to say is it’s been a blur but a wonderful ride," she wrote in one recent Facebook post about her twin boys. "I made these humans," she lovingly shared … "and these onesies."
