15 Celebrities Who Are Proud Stepparents

Meeting someone, falling in love, and deciding to get married is an ordinary miracle. People, including our favorite celebrities, do it everyday. Meeting someone, falling in love, deciding to get married, and figuring out how to blend a family and become a kind and loving stepparent? That is a whole different level of ordinary miracle — one that some celebrities are navigating with joy and pride.

We all know the Cinderella story and the whole myth of the wicked stepmother, but that is just one version of the stepparenting experience. Stepparenting can also be a beautiful way of making a family and a side of parenting that takes a different kind of grace and patience.

Some celebrities, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have been terrific stepparenting role models, sharing publicly how they've navigated a sometimes tricky role and how proud they are to be a bonus parent to the stepkids in their lives. While we'll never know all of the bumps they faced along the way, we're still inspired by the love that these celebrities have for their bonus kids.

LeAnn Rimes

LeAnn Rimes hasn't had the easist adjustment to having a blended family. She and husband Eddie Cibrian have been married since 2011, and there was for sure some drama between LeAnn and Eddie's ex Brandi Glanville. Some of that drama centered around Brandi's feelings that LeAnn was overstepping her bounds as a stepmom, but the two seem to be in a better place now. Through it all, LeAnn has been nothing but positive about her feelings for her two stepsons, saying in 2017, "They bring so much joy to my life, and it's a new experience every day."

Gisele Bündchen

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen is a proud stepparent, but she'd rather not be called a stepmom, thank you very much. In response to a fan question about how she feels about being a stepmom, she explained that she doesn't like the word stepmom. "I like the word 'bonus mom' because I feel like it's a blessing in my life. I feel so lucky that I get to have an extra wonderful little angel in my life," she wrote.

Heather Rae Young

Selling Sunset features real estate agent Heather Rae Young's romance with HGTV star Tarek El Moussa, including a storyline about how quickly she became attached to his two young sons, Taylor and Brayden. The duo is now married and Heather is now a proud stepmom. She opened up about the experience on her Instagram story.

"Over the past couple of years of being a bonus mom, I've had the most special experience of being in Tay and Bray's lives, watching them grow up, putting them first, being there for them no matter what, and bonding with them on a whole new level," she wrote. "It's the biggest blessing in my life, and even though I never knew I wanted or needed it, now that I have two amazing kids in my life I can't imagine my life without them."

Gwyneth Paltrow

When Gwyneth Paltrow marred Brad Falchuk in 2018, they both had two children from prior relationships. They were so committed to making their blended family work that they took more than a year to fully move in together so the kids could get used to it. She's since talked on her podcast about how being a stepparent has changed her. "It's been a really interesting challenge for me and I love them. I've learned so much about myself through the process," she said.

Matt Damon is the ultimate celebrity girl dad! He and his wife of 16 years, Luciana, have a house full of girls, including his stepdaughter, Alexia. Matt has described his stepdaughter as "a terrific kid" and has spoken lovingly about his joy in sharing things like his favorite movies with all of his girls.

Kurt Russell

If Kate Hudson's glowing praise is any indication, Kurt Russell is not only a proud stepparent but also a darn good one! In a really moving Instagram post, Kate shared her real feelings about her mother's partner of nearly 40 years, gushing:

"I often wonder how how different our life would have been if he never entered the picture. How different I would be. Let me fill you in. He's a pick up your boot straps kinda dad. Don't cry, shake it off you're ok kinda dad. Don't let 'em push you around you got this kinda dad. Don't listen to the noise you're doing great kinda dad. Shake those hips like no one's watching kinda dad. Always get back on the horse kinda dad. Never miss a show or game kinda dad. Kids before anything, kinda dad. Work hard play hard kinda dad. My girl can rule the world kinda dad. He's an original. I love this man so much!"

Jason Momoa

Okay, focus here. This isn't a post about how to be a freaking hot stepparent (though he is — swoon). This is still about being a proud stepparent, and Jason Momoa hits that mark too! He raved that his stepdaughter is "the most real person I know. It wasn't easy, I'm sure, but she's just forged her way with elegance, you know? Just having two parents who were known in the world. The comparisons. She didn't let any of that hinder her in any way."

Abby Wambach

When Abby Wambach married writer Glennon Doyle, she became a stepparent on the difficult setting: with three teens/preteens! Since becoming a bonus mom, Abby has spoken glowingly about her new family and even became a coach for her stepdaughter's soccer team.

Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson and Ciara have a gorgeous family, which includes adorable son Future (from Ciara's previous relationship). Russell has been part of Future's life from very early on and he couldn't be happier about it. He once shared, "Being a stepdad has taught me, really, what love is like, what life is really like, and how God intends us to love."

Kamala Harris

Most of us call Kamala Harris Madame Vice President but to her two stepchildren, Cole and Ella Emhoff, she is known as "Momala." She is also an example of how to have a great relationship with her partner's ex. She wrote about it a touching essay for Elle, explaining:

"[Cole and Ella] are brilliant, talented, funny kids who have grown to be remarkable adults. I was already hooked on Doug, but I believe it was Cole and Ella who reeled me in. To know Cole and Ella is to know that their mother, Kerstin, is an incredible mother. Kerstin and I hit it off ourselves and are dear friends. She and I became a duo of cheerleaders in the bleachers at Ella's swim meets and basketball games, often to Ella's embarrassment. We sometimes joke that our modern family is almost a little too functional."

Princess Beatrice

When Princess Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020, she became the first grandchild of Queen Elizabeth to assume the role of stepparent. Beatrice has embraced being a bonus mom, saying that having 4-year-old stepson Wolfie in her life is "a great honor."

Gabrielle Union

By all accounts, Gabrielle Union is a proud stepparent, even though she's on the record for thinking that term is "very annoying." She shared that she approached being a stepmom with a desire to be a source of stability for husband Dwayne Wade's three children. "I just needed to be consistent so they can get used to me. They've already gone through so much upheaval, moving states away, not knowing anyone, having gone through a divorce. I knew I needed to be consistent," she said.

Candice King

Our favorite vampire from The Vampire Diaries is undead on the screen, but very much alive and very much a stepparent in real life. She has two stepdaughters and raved about the experience, saying: "Motherhood is such a special, life-altering, heart-expanding journey. So thankful to be a stepmother to my beautiful stepdaughters and a new mommy to this lil punk rock princess. Honored to watch these girls grow and carve out their place in the world. You're all teaching me so much about life."

Blake Shelton

Though Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have been together since 2015, Blake didn't officially become a stepparent to Gwen's three sons until the duo married in 2021. Though Blake has said that he is very serious about being a good stepdad, he clarified that he is still a fun dad too. "I don't take it so serious that I'm not enjoying this time because I really am, especially now that we're five years into this thing," he said in a 2021 radio interview. "I can't imagine my life without these kids now."

Teddi Mellencamp

Reality star Teddi Mellencamp may like to be part of the Housewives drama on TV, but in real life she's a doting stepmom to stepdaughter Isabella, who she described as "smart, kind, beautiful and talented." In a touch tribute, Teddi gushed , "From the moment your daddy introduced me to you, I knew my life was forever changed in a way I could have never imagined. I am so grateful to have gotten to know and grow with you."
