Family planning looks different for every family. While some families choose to have a woman take birth control to keep from getting pregnant, others opt to have the man be the one who takes preventive measures. Getting a vasectomy is a common procedure, but there’s always a chance it doesn’t work.
One woman took to TikTok to share that despite her husband’s vasectomy, she got pregnant, and they have no idea how it happened.
The family had a plan in place
Victoria Wood and her husband, Will, decided that they were done having kids after welcoming their second daughter in 2022. They gave themselves some time to make sure that they felt good about that decision, and in 2023, they decided that Will would undergo a vasectomy.
“We both made the decision together, and Will was really proactive in getting it all scheduled and done,” Victoria told People. “They were very clear and up-front about, ‘Hey, you and your partner should discuss this before you schedule it, because you need to treat this as it’s permanent,'” Will added.
The universe had a different set of plans
“After the procedure, you send in a kit for them to test to let you know if you are, in fact, sterile so that you can stop other birth control. They were very clear that during that time, we needed to keep another form of birth control, which we did. At the end of January, they sent me the results, and I had zero sperm in my analysis,” Will explained.
But then in May, Victoria realized that she hadn’t gotten her period in April. She brushed it off since she has inconsistent periods, but then she started feeling like something was off. “I had this little voice in the back of my head, like, ‘I think we need to take a pregnancy test,'” she said.
Despite the procedure, Victoria was pregnant
An at-home pregnancy test confirmed Victoria’s feelings, indicating that she was pregnant, which confused the couple. Will said he was “pretty meticulous with following the instructions for my procedure,” and that Victoria’s pregnancy “didn’t really add up.”
Despite another sperm analysis saying that he wasn’t producing sperm, a sonogram in the ER confirmed that Victoria was pregnant. The couple was “overwhelmed” at the prospect of another child, but the most important thing to them was figuring out how Victoria got pregnant again, even if the report said Will wasn’t producing sperm.
Victoria turned to social media for help
Victoria made a TikTok video sharing her story, trying to see if maybe there was someone out there who could give the couple some reassurance or guidance.
“I thought, ‘Maybe if I can reach medical professionals or people who have worked in labs, they can glean any helpful information.’ I was hoping someone could guide us or provide us with something, because we’re still really confused about how this happened,” she explained.
She spared no detail in her video, even sharing that family and medical professionals had suggested that she was unfaithful. As a way to prove that she wasn’t, she underwent a paternity test.
Several people in the comments shared stories of other failed vasectomies to prove to the couple that what was happening to them has happened to others before them. “My brother was conceived after my father had a vasectomy AND my mother had her tubes tied… the doctor said it was a miracle he was definitely meant to be! Congratulations ,” one person wrote.
They don't know if they'll ever get the answers they seek
“It comes down to how much I want to try to endure to get answers I may never truly get,” Will said. “The medical bills add up too. We don’t have a solid lead to go on, so it may be time to accept our miracle somehow happened and leave it at that.”
Right now, the couple is focusing their energy on the upcoming arrival of baby number three, and turns out, it’s another girl. “I joke that we’re happy it’s a girl because we’re over surprises,” Victoria quipped.
“Unplanned pregnancies can be really challenging for families. It’s important for you and your partner to talk about these things and try to be on the same page,” Will said, crediting Victoria and their supportive families for getting them through this difficult time.
