I Just Bought Throwable Paintballs for My Son’s 13th Birthday, and I’m a Little Scared

My son is turning 13 next week, which feels like an incredibly big milestone I am not ready for.

Becoming a teenager feels like I should make a bigger deal out of this year’s birthday party than the other parties I have thrown for him in the past. And because his birthday usually consists of a gaggle of fellow now-teenager boys, it’s only fitting that the messier and more unruly the party, the better.

So when I came across these throwable paintballs while browsing the Michaels’ site one day (a secret favorite pastime of mine), I knew I had to get them.

According to Michaels, Goblies Throwable Paintballs are paintballs that you “throw like water balloons but create a colorful splatter like a paintball.”

Each bag contains 40 paintballs and they come in six different color options:

  • Purple
  • Blue
  • Pink
  • Green
  • Red
  • Teal

The outside of the paintballs are made with seaweed, so they will dissolve and don’t require picking up in your yard after the fun is over.

Meanwhile, the inside of the paintballs are made with plant-based thickeners and washable dyes that are also nontoxic, so they’re … safe? Safe-ish? I am not completely sure, but they sound as good as throwable paintballs can get, if I’m being honest.

Normally priced at $7.99, the throwable paintballs are on sale for only $3.99, bringing the savings to a full $4 off, which made them even more irresistible.

They are packed in liquid to preserve them, so I imagine once you open the package, you have to move fast, or they’ll start disintegrating.

Fortunately, if you’re using them in a party, you know those kids will be heaving those things as fast as humanly possible, so that shouldn’t be a big concern. It looks like you are supposed to pour the paintballs into a big tub of water and hand them out to each kid to preserve them as the fight goes down.

The pictures show kids absolutely delighted to demolish each other with the throwable paintballs, and while I can already picture my son’s excitement, I would be lying if I didn’t say I wasn’t just a little nervous about the mess the paintballs will create.

Reviews for the throwable paintballs, however, are overwhelmingly positive.

“Vibrant colors and the perfect mess,” described one shopper.

“Super fun and washes out great. VERY bright,” said another.

“Purple was bright and fun. They pop pretty easy. Fun for most ages,” added another 5-star reviewer.

My plan is to let the boys either have it shirtless or pick up a cheap pack of white T-shirts to let them wear and destroy, so those colors really pop. (Get it?)

Time will tell if I’m the coolest mom ever to throw a throwable paintball party, or I will come to deeply, deeply regret my decision. Either way, I popped these paintballs in my cart, and I’m hoping for the best. Wish me luck!
