Although the young explorer was looking forward to setting the Guinness World Record for the deepest-ever completion, he had already mastered completing the Rubik's Cube in mere seconds.
The mom gave up her spot on the submersible to her son after he expressed an interest in the excursion.
"I was really happy for them because, both of them, they really, really wanted to do that for a very long time," she said, according to BBC News.
She added that her husband, Shahzada, had a childlike excitement about finally achieving a lifelong dream, CBS News reports.
"His enthusiasm brought the best out of me," she said.
As she copes with the loss of her son and husband, Christine said she plans to continue their passion projects, including learning to solve the Rubik's Cube, despite being "really bad at it."
