What to Know
The internet is a wild place. You truly never know what kind of bonkers stories people are going to share about themselves. Sometimes, I’m shocked by what kind of things people want to reveal about themselves to strangers, but then again, I’m a fairly private person. Still, I admit that I love hearing other people’s confessions. Savannah Paul, a Christian influencer on Instagram, had no idea a story she considers just a sweet anecdote would make her go viral. But it did, and then she had no choice but to address it.
The original video had people scratching their heads.
Savannah Paul probably had no idea what kind of reaction people were going to have when she posted the original video.
“Met a cute boy at our mutual cousin’s wedding,” she wrote over a clearly old clip of the couple dancing. The video then cuts to the couple coming out of a church after their own wedding.
“Yes, I met my husband at our mutual cousin’s wedding. 🤪 (no, we don’t share any blood),” she wrote. “I told all my aunts and uncles that I had a crush on him, and it got back around to him that night. I asked the DJ to play another slow song so I could ask Hayden to dance. His sister filmed it so she could make fun of him later. But now we have a video of the first time we ever danced.”
She has to know that people are going to make assumptions.
Paul had no choice but to respond after people were crashing out over her video.
“You gotta explain this cuz people in the comments are hearing banjos,” a comment bubble says on the video. Sadly, the comments have been disabled, so we can’t get people’s thoughts on the update.
“Because the internet is having an aneurysm over my last video, let me prove to you that my husband is not my cousin,” Paul says, Sharpie marker in hand.
It is a bit confusing, but she lays it out clearly.
“This is me,” she says, drawing a smiley face. “I have a dad and a mom. My mom has a sister,” she explains before pausing.
She then draws another smiley face to represent her husband. “He also has a dad and a mom,” she said. “His mom has a brother.”
Paul then explains that her mom’s sister and her husband’s mom’s brother are married and have children. Those children are both Savannah and her husband’s cousins.
So despite what people on the internet believe, Savannah Paul and her husband aren’t related.
“We are not cousins,” she reiterates. “My husband is my mom’s sister’s husband’s sister’s son. There’s no name for what we are.”
She continues, saying they’re “not even second cousins. We’re just husband and wife.”
Paul really drives the point home in the post’s caption. “No, we had never met until the cousin’s wedding. No, we are not related by blood any more than I’m related to the person reading this caption. Yes, it’s totally legal and not morally unacceptable in any way. 😂 (and yes, the mutual cousins think we are weird as heck.)”
I guess the mystery is solved then!
