Safe Halloween Treat Ideas

“Trick or treat” is what every kid is dying to say during the Halloween season. Back in the day — meaning, two years ago, pre-pandemic — the worry was only about having allergy-free candies and ordering the right costume in time.

But now, with COVID-19 still looming in our neighborhoods, what do we do? Do we go house to house? What are the guidelines for distributing — and receiving – safe Halloween candy? We have some tips and recipes for a fun, safe Halloween 2021.

How to have a safe Halloween but still have fun

According to the CDC, the general idea is to still be mindful of who you are with and where you are going:

  • Avoid direct contact
  • Give treats outdoors, if possible
  • Set up a station with individually wrapped bags for kids to take
  • Wash before handling the treats
  • Wear a mask

So, mask up if you’re indoors, keep a safe distance if you’re outdoors, and also have some hand sanitizer around while you grab and distribute treats.

But fun can still be had this Halloween season, while still following COVID guidelines. “We have to recognize that trick-or-treating is an outdoor activity, which is fantastic,” Keri Althoff of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health told Eater. “It is important that we celebrate these holidays…that we have fun, even in a pandemic. But we have to do it safely.”

The glee of Halloween is having our children live out their make-believe dreams. The excitement shouldn’t stop because of a pandemic, and there are definitely ways to keep the fun alive during this holiday while still staying safe.

One way that mom Joanna Chow is going to have her two boys celebrate Halloween is by making bagged treats. “This year, my children will be busy making goodie bags for their classmates,” she told Mom.com. She also shared that one of her go-to treats are Japanese Corn Puffed Snacks, which pack a lot of flavor and are conveniently individually wrapped.

And with all of the treats listed below, make your own unique goodie bags for your kids to pass out or to enjoy on their own.

Jake Skellington Pops
A Nightmare Before Christmas has become a classic Halloween staple. Make these nut-free cake pops, and the theme song “This is Halloween” will commence.

Chocolate-covered Halloween pretzels
Sometimes a sweet and salty combination is all that you need — ahem — I mean, it is what your kid will love this Halloween season. Pretzel sticks drizzled in chocolate can never not be a good thing. Enjoy this nut-free treat that’s also easy to make.

Boo Bark
Here is another easy Halloween nut-free treat that can be swiftly placed into goodie bags. Make chocolate bark that has sprinkles, edible candy eyes, and colorful M&Ms.

Gluten-free store-bought candies
Hershey’s, Smarties, Jelly Belly jelly beans, Snyder’s gluten-free pretzels, and several Nestle candies are just a handful of the products available in stores that make gluten-safe treats for your kiddos.

Do know that before purchasing or consuming any products, you should review the product’s list of ingredients as they may change at any time.

Non-candy treats

Color in Halloween themed slap bracelet
Want to put together a non-food treat that will still entertain your kid and his friends? Place out these slap bracelets for an easy Hallow’s Eve craft.

Slime
Slime is a classic Halloween prop. Drop these squishy globs into baggies, and have your kid and their friends play with the ooey-gooey-ness of the slime.

With all of these treats to distribute, get creative and think of fun ways to pass out candy without having to be in close contact.
