There are so many reasons why October is one of the best months. First, it’s the start of fall, which means back-to-school time, PSL, sweaters, and usually a slower pace after the busy summers. There is also Halloween to look forward to, and for some it’s the start of holiday shopping, too.
It’s also an excellent month to have a baby. Even though an October baby usually means we’re super pregnant in the summer, it’s a lovely month for that postpartum period. We can feel comfortable in oversize sweaters, and the fall brings the perfect weather to go on a stroll with our baby and not have to worry about overheating or bundling them up too much.
Also, it turns out there are some scientific perks to having a kid in October. Not just for the parents, but some interesting facts about babies born in October, too. Here are a few.
October babies are born under the Libra or Scorpio star sign
Some people believe that horoscopes and the sign we’re born under can predict a lot about our personality and life. Babies born in October will either fall under Libra (September 23 – October 22) or Scorpio (October 23 – November 21).
Libras tend to be extroverts who are known for their charming personality and are easygoing and laid-back. Scorpios are powerful and passionate people who speak up for what they believe in.
More presidents have been born in October than any other month
Suppose you have any hopes or dreams of your baby growing up to become president of the United States one day. In that case, they’ll have some good company if they’re born in October.
There are more American presidents born this month than any other – including Carter, Hayes, Eisenhower, Adams, and Roosevelt.
October-born babies tend to live longer than those born in other months
According to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Aging Research, people born in October tend to live longer than people born in any other month. However, it turns out hitting the big 100th birthday is more common for people who have fall birthdays — between September and November.
A similar study was published the following year through the University of Chicago, which hypothesized that the longer life spans might do with seasonal infections.
October birthdays come with fewer heart risks
Another benefit for fall-born babies, including those with October dates, is not only will they be more likely to live longer, but they will probably have fewer cardiovascular issues, too.
A study from Columbia University Medical Center said that people born in September, October, and November are less likely to experience cardiovascular disease.
People with October birthdays have better mental health but are more irritable
Researchers have linked an October birthday with having a lower risk of mental health issues, including suicidal ideation, depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorders.
While it’s a bonus to be less likely to experience mental health issues, fall-born babies tend to be more irritable.
October-born people are more physically fit and athletic
A 2015 study looking at athletics found a benefit once again to have a baby in the fall. Children born in October and November performed better than the other kids in the study regarding youth sports.
The thinking behind why this happens isn’t just a random chance, and the scientists believe it has to do with the vitamin D levels of the pregnant person before the baby is born. That translates to immense bone mass and muscles, which leads to higher chances of being physically fit and athletic.
Your baby likely won’t be born on Halloween
Pregnant people tend to worry that their baby’s birthday will come on a holiday, dampening celebrations for their whole life. No one wants to share their special day with something people are already celebrating.
So, for any parents worried that their little one will be born on Halloween, a fascinating fact is that it’s the least popular day to have a baby in October.
