Measures to Conserve Water

Shut Off the Tap

Turn off the water when it's not in use. Turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth, wash your face or shave can save gallons of water each day. After rinsing your brush or putting soap on your face, turn off the water until you need to rinse your face or mouth. When shaving, fill the basin with a small amount of water to rinse the blade instead of using running water.

Shower Smarter

Limit your time in the shower to about five minutes. You only need to be under running water long enough to apply soap and shampoo and rinse off; any longer results in water and money down the drain. If you have a hard time sticking to a time limit, consider using low-flow shower heads or shower timers that are easily installed and take the guess work out of conservation.

Smarter Appliance Use

Dishwashers and washing machines have simplified our daily lives and resulted in a lot of waste in the process. To avoid unnecessary water waste, only run the dishwasher or washing machine when they are full. Waiting a few more hours or days for a full load is an easy way to conserve water without sacrificing results.

Stop the Leaks

Check your home for leaking faucets or pipes. The Earth Easy website recommends checking your water meter, not using any water for a few hours and checking the meter again. If there is measurable water use during that period, it's likely there is a leak and you should contact a plumber to seal it. Tighten dripping faucets and repair running toilets. These simple home repairs can save gallons of water every day.

Efficiently Maintain Your Yard

Water your lawn and plants exclusively. Don't waste water from a sprinkler or hose on pavement; it won't get any greener no matter how long it soaks. Direct water output only on your plants and grass for a better-looking lawn with no added expense or inconvenience.
