How to Make Housecleaning Tasks Easy

Step 1

Organize your cleaning supplies. Gather the supplies together and designate an area to store them. Choose separate sections for surface cleaners, kitchen and bathroom cleaning supplies and other cleaning agents. Label each section of your storage area to easily locate cleaning chemicals and tools.

Step 2

Create homemade cleaning supplies. Mix 1 part water with 1 part bleach, baking soda or vinegar to create simple, multipurpose cleaning solutions. Cut up old T-shirts or use old socks as dusters and cleaning rags.

Step 3

Break down a task into smaller parts. If you have an entire week's worth of laundry or a mountain of dirty dishes, divide the cleaning sessions into manageable portions. Make large chores smaller by working on them for timed increments and taking breaks. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed from a large task.

Step 4

Designate cleaning days for specific maintenance chores. Once a week do a deeper clean by vacuuming, dusting, mopping and cleaning bathrooms. Pick one day a month to clean hard-to-reach surfaces and rarely used rooms.

Step 5

Get rid of clutter. Gather some boxes and plastic garbage bags and go through your house to eliminate rarely used items; donate them to charity or throw them out. To help yourself decide what to keep, hold up a particular item and ask yourself if you like and need it, or if you don't love it or need it. Unwanted items go in the donation pile.
