They say you never forget your first time, and when it comes to a new mother’s first postpartum poop, they really, REALLY mean it.
Let’s get one thing straight: The first poop after giving birth is not for the weak. It’s not cute. It’s not chill. That first postpartum poop is a medical milestone each mom must pass before she can leave the hospital post-birth. And it’s definitely not discussed enough, considering it feels like trying to pass a cinder block with stitches and a broken soul.
So when TikTok mom Tiffany Remington (@ustheremingtons) shared a video of herself facing that exact postpartum milestone with her husband Caleb right there in the trenches — and I mean RIGHT THERE — I felt seen. And judging by the 8.5+ million views on her video, I’m not the only one.
In the now-viral clip, Tiffany is squatting over the hospital toilet, post-stool-softener (IYKYK), clearly in agony. “Ow!” she yells. Her husband Caleb, husband of the year, calmly responds, “OK, I think you’re clean,” before handing her a pad and postpartum undies like a seasoned doula.
THIS. This is the support every new mom deserves.
Before the haters could chime in, Tiffany made it clear in her caption that yes, she could do it herself, but her husband offered because he knows how she feels about being even remotely unclean, especially with everything torn, swollen, and tender.
Let’s hear it for the spouses who don’t flinch at postpartum body moments and just roll up their sleeves (or in this case, those sexy maternity mesh panties) and help.
Tiffany, who lives in Portland, has been incredibly transparent in showing her followers what postpartum really looks like. It’s not all filtered baby snuggles and “You got this, mama” memes.
She posts the messy, scary, deeply human side of motherhood that no one warns you about until you’re already knee-deep in hormones, exhaustion, lanolin, and adult diapers.
But some are asking, why share the postpartum poop video at all?
As she told Today: “Women don’t have to do everything without help,” she says. “Otherwise, we create unwritten expectations that we can do it all and that’s when we physically, emotionally, and spiritually crash.”
Can we get an amen?
She also gets why some people balked at her husband seeing the business end of postpartum, but as she explains: “For us, intimacy goes beyond the physical … I don’t blame people for how they feel. The realest parts of life are often stigmatized.”
I’ll drink a lukewarm, microwave-reheated coffee to that!
In the video and in the comments, it’s clear: Tiffany and Caleb aren’t trying to shock the internet. They’re trying to normalize this experience for new moms, especially those who are going through it alone, thinking they’re broken, dramatic, or weak for struggling.
Spoiler alert: You’re none of those things. You’re just postpartum. And it’s really, really hard.
As Tiffany put it perfectly: “The first visit to the loo can be terrifying,” she wrote. “You don’t have the adrenaline of pushing out a baby, so it can be painful. It can also feel like you’re doing this alone and experiencing these (very) real feelings by yourself. I promise you, you’re not!”
But you’re not. She reminds us all: “THIS IS NORMAL.”
And listen, for the folks side-eyeing her openness or calling it “too much,” she’s got one final message: This is real life. This is motherhood. And this is love.
Thousands of TikTok users echoed her sentiments, especially giving props to Caleb for stepping up without hesitation. One commenter summed it up perfectly: “Men take note — this is the support your wife wants. Good on you, Dad. And Mom, for letting him help 😅.”
As for Caleb? He didn’t think twice. He was there for her first postpartum poop back in 2021 with their first daughter, and now again with baby number two. Because that’s what love looks like when the epidural wears off and the real work begins.
So to the new moms out there bracing for that first bathroom visit: You’re not alone. We see you. We’ve been you. And yes, it’s OK to let someone hand you a pad and some dignity.
