Step 1
Prepare your fire using the "teepee" method. Make a pile of small sticks in the middle of the fire pit. Prop up some large logs to surround the kindling — make a teepee of wood. If you have newspaper, put this under the kindling.
Step 2
Light the kindling or newspaper with your matches or lighter, taking care not to burn yourself. Lighting it in multiple locations helps the larger logs catch fire faster. If you're cooking with a stick, continue to Step 3. If you're cooking using tin foil and the coals of a smoldering fire, skip to Step 5.
Step 3
Fasten your desired foodstuff, such as a hot dog, sausage or marshmallow, to the end of your stick.
Step 4
Lower the stick into the fire and cook the item until it's done. Rotate the stick to ensure the item cooks evenly. The closer to the flame, the more burnt the outside will be, but the faster the item will cook.
Step 5
If you are using the coals of a fire that's already died down, you can safely cook your food in tin foil. Wrap an item, such as a potato or a piece of freshly caught fish, in the foil, making sure to cut a hole for breathability and room for expansion.
Step 6
Place the wrapped item on the coals and let it cook for 20 to 30 minutes. Use sticks to turn the item frequently while it cooks.
