Step 1
Get the basics for cheap. Don't spend big bucks on essential garments; buy them at an affordable price. The next time you're tempted to spend money on a tank top just because it is designer, think again. Old Navy, Kohl's and Target have tank tops, T-shirts and camisoles available for as little as $7. With prices that are inexpensive, you can afford to stock up, which means you just expanded your wardrobe.
Step 2
Avoid buying overly trendy clothes. We've all been there — you buy something really popular, wear it a few times and then it goes out of style. Instead, purchase a classic that you'll be able to wear again and again.
Step 3
Take advantage of discounts and coupons. Many stores offer coupons to customers who frequently shop. While 10 percent off may not seem like a lot, it can add up. Asking for a discount at the checkout counter of your favorite store can never hurt.
Step 4
Shop for seasonal clothing after the season ends. By doing so, you'll avoid paying full price and your closet will be ready for next season.
Step 5
Use things you already have. If you are growing bored with your wardrobe, use your accessories. Try pairing a scarf with a sweater and jeans or a necklace with a dress. Only you will know that your "new" outfit isn't so new.
Step 6
Buy clothes in your size. Anticipate losing weight? Good for you, but wait until after your diet to purchase new clothes. This will not only give you something to look forward to, but will help keep your closet clean.
