Apply Sunscreen Daily
The most important step in taking care of your skin in the summer is daily application of sunscreen. To protect your skin from sun damage and skin cancer, apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. If you are swimming or sweating heavily, be sure to reapply regularly. When possible, avoid spending time in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when its rays are the strongest. Ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays can still penetrate the skin on cloudy days, so be sure to wear sunscreen even if you do not see the sun. If you prefer a tanned look, opt for a self-tanner or bronzer to provide a healthy glow without risking sun exposure.
Switch to Lighter Products
Because the weather is often more humid in the summer, most people experience an increased oiliness in their skin. As a result, it is better to use lighter products during summer months to prevent clogged pores and acne. When it comes to makeup, avoid heavy liquid or cream foundations. Individuals with dry skin may prefer a tinted moisturizer, which provides light moisture and coverage, while those with oily skin should opt for powdered foundation. If your skin requires a moisturizer, use lighter, oil-free formulas, such as lotions or gels, instead of heavy creams. Individuals with oily skin may not require any moisturizer in the summer, as sunscreen may provide enough moisture for the skin.
Exfoliate Regularly
During the summer months, clogged pores may become an issue as increased oil, sweat and dead skin cells can all become trapped on the surface of the skin. To prevent acne breakouts, exfoliate on a regular basis. Facial scrubs with small grains or beads may be used several times a week and are particularly important for oily skin. Beta hydroxy acid (BHA), such as salicylic acid, is a chemical exfoliant that also dissolves oil, and is found in a variety of products. During the summer, it is best to use BHAs in lighter formulas like toners or serums.
Smooth on a Clay Mask
If your skin is excessively oily during the summer months, using a clay mask one to two times a week can be helpful. The clay absorbs excessive oil and tightens pores, which helps keeps skin clear and smooth even as the temperatures rise.
