10 Packing Essentials for a Family Trip Abroad This Holiday Season

As summer comes to a close, it feels like the holiday season is just around the corner. While some might be eagerly awaiting snow angels and hot cocoa, some are already dreading the crowded airports, delays, and getting to your hotel only to realize you left your phone charger at home. As a certified travel adviser, I have truly seen it all, which is why I have compiled a list of 10 essential items that every family should pack in their carry-on before leaving for the airport this winter. Now I know what you’re thinking – packing is the easiest part, right? I wish that was the case. From dealing with motion sickness to keeping your kiddos entertained on a long international flight, there is a lot to consider when packing for a family trip abroad.

Seasick Bands

Contrary to popular belief, seasick bands aren’t JUST for traveling by sea! These anti-nausea wristbands are used to relieve motion sickness for all modes of transportation, from planes to cruises to ski lifts and more. If you or your loved ones are prone to motion sickness, I suggest throwing a few of these in your bag before your trip to avoid feeling yucky on the trip.

Travel Booster Seats

No longer do you need to drag around a big and bulky booster seat. If you have little ones who still need a booster seat, I suggest purchasing a travel booster seat. Space is crucial on a family trip abroad, so I tend to lean toward the inflatable seats to save room in my bag. Whenever we board, I just inflate this and voilá! When you arrive, it compacts to easily fit in any carry-on.

Large, Durable Backpack or Tote

When preparing for a family trip abroad, finding a bag that will fit everything is the most important to-do. I suggest investing in a super-durable, easy-to-clean backpack or tote. Even though I put all of my spillable products in plastic baggies, my bag still seems to get dirty and gross! Finding one that you can easily wipe off is a HUGE bonus in my book. Durability is also something I look for when purchasing a carry-on. You want something that will stand up to those overhead bins and last a long time.

EarPlanes

If your kids complain about earaches on plane rides, this product is a MUST. I bought this for my kiddo before our last trip and it has been a lifesaver! If your kids don’t like objects in their ears, you can also give them a piece of gum to chew on.

Children’s Medicine Travel Kit

You never want to start a fun family vacation on a sour note. As a parent, I’m always preparing myself for any emergency or medical situation. I bought this travel medical kit to keep in my bag for any upset tummies or stuffy noses. This kit comes with individually wrapped, chewable tablets that will have your kiddo feeling better in no time.

Easy Card Games

To avoid the endless, age-old question of “Are we there yet?” find some easy card games that will occupy your kids for a while. These are easy to lay out on the tray tables and don’t take up a lot of space. You would be surprised at how long these can keep your children entertained!

Ride-On Suitcase

Long travel days are exhausting for everyone, which is why I like to bring a ride-on suitcase for each of my kiddos to rest on when they are able. These are especially helpful for crowded gates with limited seating, so you don’t have to worry about separating or sitting on the floor.

Snacks from Home

Being in a new environment can be stressful and hard on anyone. While I always like to encourage my kids to try new things, I like to bring a few things from home that I know will surely satisfy their taste buds.

Gallon-Size Freezer Bags

I always stock up on these right before a trip! I recommend keeping gallon-size freezer bags on hand before your trip and throwing the extras in your suitcase. You never know when these will come in handy. Soiled kids' clothes? Perfect. Soiled parents’ shirts? Great, we have a bag for that. All the snacks? Freezer bag! You can also use these to organize outfits or accessories, too. The possibilities are endless!

Candy Canes for the Flight Attendants

This is something special my girls and I like to do every time we fly, and we like to make it extra special during the holidays. We like to give the flight attendants something small to show a small token of our appreciation for all of their hard work. You could even spruce it up and add in a packet of hot cocoa mix.

Packing for a family trip abroad, especially during the winter season, can feel daunting. But as long as you reference this list and check the weather of your destination, you will be prepared for any possible scenario that could occur. Take a breath and enjoy the cherished memories you create with your loved ones this holiday season. Happy travels!
