Packing the Ultimate Diaper Bag

Diaper Bag Basics

Don't let the name fool you. A diaper bag is much more than a simple over-the-shoulder sack that houses absorbent, disposable underwear for your little ones. It's actually an indispensable carryall that can rescue you from the unexpected. Whether you're a mom, dad, grandparent, or nanny, a sturdy diaper bag filled with all the essentials is a must. "Beyond the practical," said Ingrid Kellaghan, founder of Chicago's Cambridge Nanny Group, "investing in a good diaper bag will save you lots of time and energy by keeping you organized when you're on the go."

The Right Bag

You'll find various styles of bags out there and any of them could work for you. Stick to something large enough to hold all your necessities. Styles of diaper bags include messenger bags, oversize totes, shoulder bags and backpacks. Choose one that fits your personality and style preference. As for cost, Kellaghan says you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for a quality bag. "You can buy a perfectly chic and durable carryall for $35 to $40. Keep in mind that a more expensive bag may not deliver a bigger return in terms of convenience or durability."

Staying Organized

"If a bag doesn't keep you organized, forget about it," said Kellaghan. "If your baby's crying and you find yourself up to your elbow — literally — fishing for a pacifier on the bottom of your diaper bag, or there are so many compartments you can't remember where you put it, it may be time to look at other bags." Also, organizational inserts that pop in and out for easy access are a big help in keeping your bag in order.

Considerations

Consider your particular needs when buying a diaper bag. For example, if you're breastfeeding and need to carry your pump and bottles with you, choose a bag that stores the bottles upright to avoid leaks. Keep Dad in mind, too, notes Kellaghan. "Let's face it, dads aren't too keen on carrying around a jazzy pink bag. You can find many backpack and messenger bags made especially for men by Diaper Dude, Diaper Gear and Skip Hop."

The Basics

Always carry enough diapers to last you through the day (the specific amount depends on the child) and a few extras for emergencies. You'll also want a changing pad, travel-size wipes and rash cream, a change of clothes for your child in case of an accident and several plastic bags for disposal.

Other Items to Consider

If you have enough room in your diaper bag and you're going to be gone for a while, consider throwing in a few extras. Ideas include additional pacifiers, your child's favorite toy or comfort item, meals and snacks to get you both through the day, and a bib to avoid messes.

Things for You

Don't forget your own needs when packing the ultimate diaper bag. Add an extra shirt for yourself in case of an accident, and also pack water and your favorite snacks (that caloric pick-me-up may come in handy). Also include anything you'd carry with you in your purse: a wallet, identification, cash and a cell phone.

Packing for the Occasion

In some instances you'll want to pack a few special items in your diaper bag. For example, if you're spending time outdoors, drop in a tube of high SPF sunblock. If you foresee a nap for your baby in the afternoon, load up a book or other hobby to keep yourself entertained.

As a precaution, slip a note card into your diaper bag with all of your contact information on it, including your cell phone number, house number and address. The information may be very helpful should you ever misplace the bag. It's also wise to have a card with your pediatrician's number and several emergency contacts written on it.
