As parents, we want the best for our babies. And while we may not give it much thought, creating a skincare routine for our babies is something important. We assume that because they're just babies, that smooth, perfect baby skin comes without effort. And while it does to a certain degree, we still need to make sure that we are doing everything we can to keep it looking great.

Baby skin is very important
It's easy to forget that our skin is a living, breathing organ. The skin is the body's first line of defense against irritants and pollutants. The skin's outermost layer is made of dead skin cells and lipids (a type of fat) and creates a strong physical barrier, which prevents penetration of irritants and pathogens.
Avoid the urge to bathe your baby frequently
One thing all experts can agree on is that babies don't need a bath every day. They don't do enough physical activity to be that dirty! It's recommended that you only bathe your baby no more than three times a week using lukewarm water, and only for a couple of minutes.
Use a cleanser specifically for babies
We're lucky to live in a time where there are so many options for baby skin care. Experts recommend using a gentle cleanser that is specifically formulated for babies. Try to avoid using cleansers that are heavily scented, as those can also irritate skin, and make sure you wash their face as well as their body, getting in between any creases and crevices.
Don't forget to wash their heads
Washing your baby's hair and scalp is also important to keep their scalp clean and avoid buildup. You can use a gentle baby shampoo and rinse well, carefully avoiding their eyes. If you want, you can follow it up with a hair oil formulated for babies.
If your baby develops dandruff or cradle cap, you can still use a gentle shampoo, but if you have any concerns, check in with your pediatrician.
Dry them gently
When bath time is all done, use a soft towel (washed in fragrance-free detergent) to gently pat their skin dry. Avoid the instinct to rub their skin dry the same way you dry your own.
Moisturizing is key
Definitely don't forget about moisturizing your baby's skin! Use a gentle, unscented lotion formulated for babies. Make sure you rub the lotion in from top to bottom, not skipping any spots. And don't forget to moisturize their little faces.
Maybe try a little massage
You don't have to do it after every bath, but once a week, why not give your baby a massage? Touch is so important for little ones, and massage is a great way to have a few extra minutes of bonding. You can use their regular baby lotion, or even a specially formulated baby oil. Use gentle, circular motions, and don't forget their little ears, fingers, and toes!
