Growing up in the public eye can’t be easy, but add to that growing up in the midst of major family conflict, and it can only be worse. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, the three children of Prince William and Kate Middleton, were thrust into the spotlight from the minute they came home from the hospital. While the couple does their best to be selective about how their children are shared publicly, it doesn’t stop interest. The Wales kids are also growing up in the shadow of the rift between their father, grandfather, and Uncle, Prince Harry along with his wife Meghan Markle. And while they may not fully understand what’s happening, royal insiders say they do know it’s happening.
Even though they may not know him well, Harry may loom large in their minds.
According to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, because of how young the kids were when Harry and Meghan left the country, they probably don’t really remember them. However, they are more than likely “aware” of their overseas relatives.
“We understand that William has not spoken to Harry for over three years and that the rift remains deep. When one is very young and is aware there are family problems, there are subjects it is simply not tactful to bring up. The subject of Uncle Harry may well be one of them,” he told the Daily Express.
Fitzwilliams also said that the kids “are likely to know or have read that there are serious problems when it comes to their uncle, not to mention Aunt Meghan!!” He also believes that it is “probably impossible to be unaware of” Harry.
Despite it being his choice to leave, Harry does wish his children had more connection to their family.
“Archie and Lili are having a lovely time in California, but Harry is very sad that they are missing out on life with the rest of their family,” an old friend of his told the Daily Mail, GB News reported. “Harry feels his children are missing out on the extensive family network that their cousins are enjoying.”
Even though he may feel sad about his kids not having the same connection to family, royal biographer Omid Scobie said that it was the birth of Archie that empowered him and Meghan to leave the toxicity of the royal family.
According to Scobie, having their first child gave them the ability “to stand up for what was right for them, regardless of what the consequences. As we have seen, those consequences have been pretty major.”
Because of the family rift, Harry has only seen his father, King Charles, a handful of times since he moved to California. According to the outlet, the last time he saw his father was September 2025, a year and a half after their last visit.
There may still be hope for some degree of reconciliation between Prince Harry and his father.
According to the Examiner, Charles is ready to make a truce offer to Harry over the summer, a source told the outlet.
“There is no doubt Charles wants Harry to … come home and he’s doing everything he can to pave the way for that,” the source said, adding that “he’s not going to be taking orders from Meghan, even if they come via Harry.”
The outlet reported that Prince William believes that the Sussexes are taking advantage of the King, but Charles still hopes to reconcile with his youngest son and his family.
“From Charles’s perspective, this is about repairing a relationship with Harry and building a relationship with his grandchildren,” the source said. “He’s highly motivated in that sense.”
