
Imagine one of the greatest family-friendly Halloween movies of all time, and Hocus Pocus will probably come to mind. The 1993 film stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as a trio of witches who are about to be outsmarted by a group of clever children. It’s perfect Halloween for viewing, but it’s also not the only movie of its kind out there.
Over the years, tons of films have been produced that are OK for kids to watch but also offer something for viewers of all ages. There are funny tales about vampires, spooky adventures in haunted houses, action-packed battles against ghouls, and more.
For those of us who love popping in Hocus Pocus every Halloween season but are also looking to shake things up a bit, these 20 spooky stories have a similar vibe and will be fun for the whole family to watch.
'The Nightmare Before Christmas'

Jack Skellington’s whole existence has been dedicated to Halloween, until one day he finds himself in Christmas Town. There is some debate about whether this is a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie, but that just makes it fun to watch two times a year.
'Casper'

Ghosts don’t have to be scary! Casper, aka the friendly ghost, is a great way to introduce little ones to the world of Halloween movies, because it’s not too spooky. Plus, it’s still a fun watch even for adults.
'Halloweentown'

This Disney Channel original movie follows a girl named Marnie who learns that she’s part of a family of witches, and she’s destined to save their hometown called Halloweentown from the evil lurking just around the corner.
'Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge'

Rated: TV-PG
This sequel to the original Halloweentown again follows newly minted witch Marnie as she tries to stop an enemy who wants to unleash the spirit world into the real world. She gets some help from her grandmother, played by the late Debbie Reynolds.
'The Addams Family'

The original Addams Family feature film from the ’90s stars A-listers like Anjelica Huston as Morticia and Christina Ricci as Wednesday. It follows the hijinks of the spooky Addams family, who think it’s better to be morbid than anything else. There’s also a sequel called Addams Family Values that came out two years later.
'The Haunted Mansion'

This movie is based on the Disneyland ride of the same name and stars Eddie Murphy as a realtor who picks the wrong mansion to step foot in. With his wife and kids by his side, he has to face the ghouls and ghosts that haunt the house, and hope that he comes away the winner.
'The Witches'

Anjelica Huston is really just queen of Halloween, because, in addition to playing Morticia in The Addams Family, she plays the Grand High Witch in this 1990 movie. The plot follows a young boy who suddenly finds himself at a witch convention where he learns that they’re planning to turn children into mice. He has to stop the witches before they can enact their idea on kids everywhere — only he may become a mouse in the process, too.
'Scared Shrekless'

This animated short takes the characters from Shrek that everyone loves and sets them on a Halloween adventure. In this TV tale, Shrek and his friends have to spend the night in Lord Farquaad’s haunted palace, and the evening is filled with family friendly spooky scares.
'Monster House'

This movie takes haunted houses to the next level. It’s not just that the home is filled with monsters, it’s that the actual home itself is a monster. Three teens team up to destroy the dwelling before it can catch and attack any young trick-or-treaters.
'ParaNorman'

Rated: PG
Norman can talk to the dead, and he doesn’t get along that well with the living. But they’ll all need his help when ghosts and zombies come to attack his town. Only Norman and his special powers can try to stop them.
'Hotel Transylvania'

This is an all-new take on a vampire story. Adam Sandler voices Dracula, a dad who’s dealing with his teenage daughter (voiced by Selena Gomez) and her first crush. Protective dad Dracula? Hilarious and perfect for Halloween.
'Coraline'

This spooky and sinister story follows an 11-year-old who lands in an upside down version of her own life — but it’s harboring a terrible secret. Coraline is rated PG, but it’s a little on the scary side for younger kids. Those button eyes, man. Terrifying.
'Monster Family'

A family attempting to have a fun night out gets cursed by a witch, and they’re all turned into different monsters — like a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, a werewolf, and a mummy. Maybe they just should have stayed in for game night instead?
'Spooky Buddies'

The Air Bud franchise has a film for pretty much every sport and holiday, so it obviously has one for Halloween. In this movie, a group of adorable talking pups (who are in costume!) have a haunted house adventure together. It just goes to show, dogs make everything better — including scary movies.
'It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown'

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a short cartoon about Linus waiting in a pumpkin patch to see if the legend of the Great Pumpkin is true. It was a hit in 1966, and it’s still a hit today. Both kids and adults will get a kick out of the Peanuts’ Halloween shenanigans.
'The Addams Family' (2019)

Morticia and Gomez Addams’ spooky house and creepy family got a 3D animated makeover for this 2019 film. The star-studded voice cast in this movie includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Bette Midler, Snoop Dogg, and more. Kids will love the story and adults will love the fun references and voice cameos — and the story, too, because it really holds up.
'Twitches'

Twins Tia and Tamera Mowry play teen witches adopted by different families. They’re reunited on their 21st birthday, and soon team up to save the world and find their birth mother.
'Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie'

In this Winnie the Pooh feature film, Roo and his heffalump friend, Lumpy, go in search of a monster who can grant wishes. But if they’re not careful, the creature could turn them into pumpkins before any of their wishes come true.
'Mickey's House of Villians'

For Halloween, a bunch of Disney villains decide to take over Mickey’s House of Mouse. Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Minnie have to team up against the villains to keep their home safe from nefarious activity.
'Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein'

Alvin and the Chipmunks are associated with Christmas because of their song “Christmas Don’t Be Late,” but the rodent group also has a Halloween movie where they’re working at a movie theme park and happen to run into a real version of Frankenstein’s monster. He helps them learn that not all monsters are evil.
'The Little Vampire'

In this movie, a lonely boy named Tony makes friends with a kid who is also a vampire. Soon, the two of them have to team up to save the vampire race from a vampire hunter who will stop at nothing to destroy them all.
