What to Know
Even though a decade or two have passed for most of us by now, we all remember what it was like being in high school. Whether you were in drama club or you just enjoyed hanging out in the library during your spare period catching up on homework with friends, there was just something so sweet about hearing something completely unexpected come over the school intercom system, especially if it was meant to make you laugh. A TikTok video has gone viral that showcases a group of students giggling with one another as they listen to a variety of dog barks play over their school intercom only to have it interrupted by the daunting alert of an ALICE drill. It’s honestly pretty scary!
In a viral video, students are laughing about hearing dog barks over the school’s intercom when the fun is abruptly interrupted.
When you’re in high school, it can sometimes feel like there’s just not enough fun things going on at school throughout the day. Between studying for tests, having to present to a classroom full of bored students about your history project, and a lengthy list of extra-curriculars, your schedule can seem pretty jam-packed of nothing but obligations. So, when something happens to lighten the mood, it makes it all the more entertaining.
A recent TikTok video has gone viral as it shows a small group of students gathered in what looks like an auditorium stage area doing some school work when everyone erupts in giggles when they hear a variety of dog barks being played over their school’s intercom. Seems a little more interesting than your run-of-the-mill morning announcements, right?
You can hear one student exclaim with laughter, “I can hear it in the hallway too!” This joyful moment is quickly interrupted when the dog bark sounds are overtaken by alarm sounds and something that far too many students recognize as a lockdown drill.
When the students in the video hear the alert of an ALICE drill, you can see how it immediately changes the entire tone of the room.
One moment you’re laughing with your classmates over some unexpected dog barks that interrupted your classtime in the best way possible, and the next thing you know, it’s time to practice what happens in the event of a school shooter.
The viral TikTok video shows the caption: “Pov: you’re laughing at random dog barks playing over the intercom but then you get put into lockdown.” When the moment strikes, you can see students authentically reacting to the dinging sound of an ALICE drill alert within their school as the words “lockdown, locks, lights, out of sight” play over the intercom. The students appear to be in shock for a moment, but they quickly recover and immediately begin to grab their stuff and head to wherever they need to be for a lockdown.
Just in case you don’t live in the United States and you’re unfamiliar, an ALICE drill is something that most high school students are familiar with, as it’s active shooter response training that teaches students and school staff strategies that can be used to stay safe in the event of an active shooter.
It’s all incredibly depressing and scary, but also extremely necessary.
There’s a bevy of sympathetic and shocked comments about having to experience an ALICE drill at school.
Seriously, unless you’ve lived it yourself or you’ve had your kids detail to you what it’s like, most people won’t understand the immediate terror one can feel when going through an ALICE drill at school. One individual in the comments of the TikTok video says, “Alice drills will forever haunt me.” Another person states, “‘Lockdown, locks, lights, out of sight,'” THAT’S SCARY WTF.” Yeah, we’d have to agree on that one!
Another person can’t help but share their empathetic stance by saying, “Anytime people complain about teenagers and young adults these days, I just think about how most of the people complaining have probably never done an Alice drill or been in a real Alice lockdown.” That’s a very good point.
Unless you’ve experienced what it’s like to go through something like an ALICE drill or an actual lockdown put in place due to a violent intruder coming into your school, it can be difficult to really put yourself in these students’ shoes.
