The Perks of Being Pregnant During a Pandemic (and, Yes, There Are Some!)

When you’ve been pregnant a few times already, it’s hard not to compare. My first pregnancy was much harder than my second, and my fourth took things to new heights. But my current pregnancy — my fifth — no doubt rivals them all. Mostly due to the pandemic.

By this point, I thought I knew pregnancy. I thought I knew all the potential curveballs. But then — SURPRISE! — pregnant during a pandemic.

For months, I slumped. My first trimester was brutal. And lonely. There were few distractions as we were in a pretty strict lockdown. As my nausea lifted, I came out of my fog a little, but it was still apparent that this pregnancy would be unlike any other.

I charged myself with finding the bright side. After all, I was healthy, my baby was healthy – everything was going to be OK, albeit different. And someday I would be able to tell my little one, “You and Mama survived quite the ordeal – a pandemic – while you grew in my tummy!”

If you're also trying to focus on the bright side of being pregnant during a pandemic, keep these perks in the forefront of your mind:

My maternity wardrobe is sparse yet cozy

I rarely leave home, and when I do, it’s just a quick grocery errand, so all my plans for cute maternity outfits are on halt. I live in the same maternity leggings and cozy tees these days. Thanks to the pandemic, I have definitely saved money on my maternity wardrobe.

Curbside is now a legit service

For years, I have dreamed of being able to call a store and have them walk my purchase out. I used to think, “If only they knew how hard it was for a mom to just ‘pop in’ for one or two items”. Well, thanks to the pandemic, curbside pickup is now a real service. I hope it never goes away!

It’s easier to exercise

With less social commitments, it’s definitely easier to get outside for a little stroll or end the day with some prenatal yoga.

Virtual support is more available than ever

From birth classes to appointments to counseling – professionals everywhere have transferred valuable content and conversations to a virtual format. That makes things so accessible!

No one balks at germ awareness

I feel like new moms have always been given grief for shying away from kisses, hugs, and outings in those newborn days. But now everyone understands germs and washing hands and keeping their distance.

Cravings are easy to fulfill

Between grocery pickup, curbside, and delivery, I can basically get whatever I want, whenever I want it, without any extra cost – there seem to be constant deals! Bring on the blackberry ice cream with a side of chocolate-covered almonds.

There's more time for just my baby and me

With less go, go, go, I’ve had more time to sit and connect with my baby. From getting a jumpstart on my baby book to practicing guided meditations, this quieter season has been good for my heart as a mother.
