Oregon Teen Rescues 9-Month-Old After Family Was Killed by Downed Live Wire

An Oregon teen is sharing how she saved a baby after the rest of the baby's family was killed by a downed live wire during a winter storm last week. Eighteen-year-old Majiah Washington rescued a 9-month-old baby boy after both of his parents and his uncle were killed. To her, saving the baby was the right thing to do.

The Associated Press reported that the teen explained how she saw a flash outside her home, and immediately opened her blinds to see an SUV with a downed power line on it. A couple had been trying to get their baby into the car when the mother then yelled to her partner to get the baby out of the car and to safety. After retrieving the baby from the SUV, the dad slipped on the icy concrete, causing his foot to touch the live wire. When the woman, who was pregnant, attempted, she also slipped and died. So did her 15-year-old brother, who came out of the house to help.

Then came a moment of hope

Washington was already on the phone with a dispatcher when she noticed the baby's head move. Despite just seeing three people die due to the live wire, Washington decided to attempt to save the 9-month-old baby's life.

"I was concerned about the baby," Washington said. "Nobody was with the baby."

NBC News shared more of Washington's story from the press conference.

"I crouched down, I like kind of slid, I used my hands to break my fall, and I didn’t land on top of his father but my hands landed on top of him and I just grabbed the baby," she explained.

"I just thought, I have a nephew myself, I have little brothers, I would want somebody to do the same thing, I would hope somebody would do the same thing. I’m just thinking that this is something, if you see a baby, who’s not going to go save a baby? But I guess everybody doesn’t think about it like that," she said.
