Virginia Mom Naturally Conceives Twins and Triplets in Rare Occurrence

Finding out you’re having twins can be a pretty big shock for anyone. At least, it was for Monique Davaul, a Virginia mom who already had a 2-year-old son at the time and wasn’t expecting to suddenly have three kids under her roof. But little did she know that the real shock would come six years later when Davaul learned that she was once again pregnant — not with one baby or even two babies, but this time with three.

You might assume that Davaul has a history of multiples in her family

Or, another logical assumption might be that she underwent fertility treatments before conceiving.

But according to the 30-year-old mom, neither of those are true.

“I don’t have a family history of multiples,” Davaul recently told Today. “All my kids were conceived naturally.”

And while there is a case of twins on the paternal side of the family, that doesn’t actually factor into her own story, since fraternal multiples are known to come from the mother’s side.

When Davaul learned she was having twins, she was a 24-year-old with a toddler

Her son Messiah, now 8, whom she shares with her partner, Lamar Logan, was certainly the light of her life. But even so, she was overwhelmed by the thought of suddenly bringing home two more babies.

“I cried and cried, asking, ‘What will I do with two babies at once?'” the mother recalled.

But then came her twins, Nasir and Sincere, now 6, and in time, Davaul and Logan got into their groove as a family of five.

Fast-forward five more years, and Davaul once again found herself in a state of shock

First came a positive at-home pregnancy test, followed by an ultrasound at the hospital, just to be sure.

There, doctors not only confirmed that the mother was pregnant again, but also told her that there were three separate embryos — a boy and two girls — meaning she was carrying three fraternal triplets.

“They said, ‘Ms. Davaul, you’re pregnant with triplets’ — they were really excited,” she told Today. “They [asked if I] conceived naturally, and I said, ‘You think I will do something to have three kids at once? I already have three at home!'”

Meanwhile, she says her partner was “in shock” over the news.

As the months ticked by, the couple once again prepared to grow their family

And when their adorable triplets finally arrived on April 12, the parents did their best to learn the ropes of handling multiple newborns at once.

“I had never seen a set of triplets until I had them,” Davaul said of her two
daughters Mielle and Noelle, and her son, Jihad.

The babies were born at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia, all weighing under 4 lbs.

Following the birth, a hospital spokesperson stressed just how unique Davaul’s situation truly is.

In fact, they told TODAY that the likelihood of naturally conceiving twins followed by multiples is “so rare that it’s hard to find any statistics on the occurrence.”

Apparently, multiples in general are also pretty rare in Newport News, Virginia

A statement later provided by the labor and delivery nurses at Riverside noted that Davaul’s triplets were actually the first ones the hospital had seen in five years.

“We’re so proud to have been a part of this special moment for this family,” reads a statement from the hospital’s nurses. “Moments like these are truly a reminder of why we love being nurses … It’s an honor to be able to provide care and support to families during the most important times of their lives.”

Remarkably, Davaul appears to be taking things in stride so far

For one thing, she has a pretty secure village around her, which includes her mom and sisters. Her 8-year-old son has also been helpful. Now that he’s older, he actually takes pride in getting his 5-year-old siblings ready for school and helping out with the newborns however he can.

“I don’t have any complaints, but I’m surprised I am able to adapt,” Davaul admitted. “I guess God is looking over me. I just do what I got to do. It’s my job as a mother to provide for my babies.”

That said, it appears the Virginia mom has officially hit her kid limit. When asked by Today what she would do if she once again conceived another set of multiples, the mom of six replied: “I haven’t thought about that … Lord Jesus.”
