What to Know
Most women don’t need a reminder of the rights they have and, more importantly, the rights they don’t have in the United States. So when one man on TikTok, Jay, pointed out in a video the glaring truth that the rights of men do not change when a man crosses state lines, but the rights of women can, it struck a nerve for many. Like I said, no one forgot that women do not have body autonomy in all 50 states, but to be reminded that men do is just a slap in the face.
Jay’s video is quick, and he explains simply that men have the same rights from state to state, while women do not. And he sparked a heated discussion in the comments from men and women, though to be fair, most are in agreement about how unfair that reality is. And it doesn’t just stop at the right to an abortion. There are other rights that women can lose, depending on which state they travel to, and until something is done about it, that’s an important thing to remember.

The rights of women can change depending on which state they travel to.
Jay says in his video, “The rights of men don’t change when you cross state lines. The rights of women do. Let that sink in.” That’s it. That’s the post. But it’s a powerful enough and true enough statement that hits home for so many women of any age and background. For example, 12 states, including Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky have all banned abortion.
According to Planned Parenthood, some states have more specific laws in place. In Ohio, abortion is legal through 20 weeks or so. In North Carolina, abortion is legal through almost 13 weeks in most cases. But that just goes to show that, state to state, a woman’s rights are different. It doesn’t matter if it’s abortion alone in this case.
That’s a right stripped from a woman if she crosses state lines to the wrong state.
When it comes to how much money women make, in some states, the law allows women to be paid less than men. Per the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, women in Wyoming earn 64.4 percent of what men do. And, when it comes to domestic violence, only some states have enacted laws to limit firearm ownership for individuals with a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.
“Mind you he’s saying STATE lines,” someone commented on Jay’s TikTok. “Thought we were supposed to receive protection from our government? NOPE! They hate us.”
Someone else added, “The people who need to hear this voted for it unfortunately.”
“Sadly the ones who need to see this and actually contemplate, just won’t,” another user commented.
There are also different rules in place for men getting vasectomies.
Although a man does not have to sign off on his wife getting birth control or an abortion, it’s hard for some not to see the discrepancy in reproductive rights when it comes to abortions versus vasectomies. If a man wants to have a vasectomy procedure, he can do so without fear of being questioned while crossing state lines. To the same tune, he wouldn’t even have to travel outside of his home state in order to have the procedure done.
In some cases, if a woman wants to have a tubal ligation, or get her tubes tied, a husband might have to agree to it. That isn’t the case across the board, but it can depend on the hospital the couple goes to. Any way you look at it, there is a huge lack of balance.
