What to Know
We’ve all heard the infamous stories where a future mother-in-law wears white to her son and daughter-in-law’s wedding to upstage the bride. But have you heard the one about the father of the bride who used his flair for the dramatic (and distasteful) to steal the spotlight from the bride and groom at the reception?
Bride and TikTok user Courtney Raspor (@courtneyraspor) shared the clip of her dad at her wedding, noting that the rude reception interruption wasn’t new, but a moment she had recently decided to revisit.
“Late night finds, but it’s just my narcissistic MAGA father crossing boundaries at my wedding,” she wrote in the text overlay.
The video, shared on October 17, currently has over 1.2 million views. It also has plenty of comments showing solidarity with the bride when it comes to her MAGA hat-wearing Dad.
In the video, we see Raspor’s dad as he prepares to make a toast at the reception. He says he promised his daughter he wouldn’t mention politics, but—surprise!—a MAGA Boomer simply can’t help themselves when it comes to being selfish.
“I made a promise not to say anything about politics, and being the man of my word I am, I’m not going to say anything about politics,” he says in the video, before pulling out the infamous red hat from his suit pocket and smugly putting it on his head.
You can hear partygoers laughing in the background before the video cuts out.
“Chose the orange man over his own daughters desire on her wedding day. No contact plain and simple,” one commenter wrote.
“And they say WE make everything political,” said another spot-on commenter.
Raspor has shared a few other dad-related videos on her TikTok account, which show that the two have a complicated relationship. In a follow-up clip to the wedding speech, viewers can see that her dad’s performance remained as narcissistic as ever once his dunce cap—sorry, MAGA hat (tomato, tomahto)—came out.
“‘How can I make this about me?’ That’s really sad I’m sorry,” another commenter shared.
Other commenters used Raspor’s video to share their own similar experiences with their political parents.
“My father called me his ‘liberal thinking daughter’ in his speech at my wedding 20 years ago, as if that were some sort of burn,” one woman shared.
And in perhaps the most vile recollection of all, another said, “My MAGA uncle came to visit my progressive mom while she was in hospice and wore a deeply offensive anti-abortion shirt and a MAGA hat. It didn’t occur to him how upset that might make her. They are only capable of thinking about themselves.”
The thing is, people who have Trumpers in their families know that nothing will ever change their minds; they’re just too far gone at this point. But what about stealing a moment from your own child at one of the biggest events of her entire life in that hurtful, selfish way is cute? Or charming? Or even remotely funny?
Spoiler alert, it’s not.
Another TikTok commenter summarized the whole messy experience best:
“‘Being the man of my word that I am,’ they think they have so much integrity and morals but it’s just narcissism, hatred, ignorance and racism.”
