Step 1
Fill the area with fresh air by opening as many windows and doors as possible. Use ceiling and window fans to help circulate the air. Reverse the window fan's direction so it is circulating air out of the room instead of blowing air in.
Step 2
Launder washable items such as clothing, curtains and bedding with 1/4 cup of laundry detergent and 1 cup of white vinegar. Vinegar is an all-natural deodorizer and fungus killer that removes odors from a variety of surfaces.
Step 3
Sprinkle baking soda liberally onto carpets and let it sit for at least a few hours — preferably overnight. Vacuum the baking soda off the carpet. Baking soda is an all-natural cleaner and deodorizer that will remove tough odors without harsh chemicals.
Step 4
Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar. Spray the vinegar liberally onto upholstery and other fabrics that cannot be washed. Allow the vinegar to air-dry on the item. As the vinegar dries, it will remove the mildew odor.
Prevent Mildew Odors
Step 1
Run a dehumidifier with a HEPA filter in the room for several hours. The dehumidifier will remove moisture from the air, which will reduce the chance of future fungus growth.
Step 2
Refrain from letting damp clothing sit for an extended period of time. Clothing that is kept damp will begin to form mold and mildew. Dry damp clothing as soon as possible to prevent fungus growth.
Step 3
Keep the washing machine door open when not in use. This will help air out and dry the inside of the washing machine while preventing mildew and mold growth.
Step 4
Stretch shower curtains open when not using them. This will help dry the shower curtains and keep fungus from growing in the creases of the curtain.
