About 30 years ago, I thought I had this whole Halloween thing wrapped up like a Tootsie Roll. Put minimal effort into organizing a costume, (mostly going as a ‘hobo’ in my father's oversized clothes). Walk around the neighborhood on a freezing Ohio autumn night. Come home with a pillowcase full of more candy than I could comfortably carry. I didn’t even like candy. It was more a ‘hunter/gatherer’ thing — a confection conquest. And thought is was awesome.
I was deluded.
Halloween, as an adult, is so much better! We still get to dress up, dress our kids up, walk the neighborhood taking pictures. But we also get to go to Halloween parties with other adults. (For many people, myself included, this is a rarity.)

Halloween 2014 will be especially good since it falls on a Friday. After an epic trick-or-treat session, my husband and I will welcome the sitter, tuck the kids into bed and tip-toe down the street to my friend Monica’s house for a post-trick-or-treat drinks party.
Under a cloak of darkness, ghouls and goblins are welcome. Kids, however, are not.
Happy, grown-up Halloween!
