Fall Cooking Activities for Kids

Apple Crisp

Warm up the kids on a crisp, fall afternoon with a delicious apple treat. You will need apples, rolled oats, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt to make an apple crisp. The apples are sliced and placed in the bottom of a baking pan and then covered with the remaining ingredients mixed with butter. Bake for about 45 minutes. Serve the apple crisp warm, topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Carrot Cake

Allow the kids to enjoy the bountiful harvest of fall by making their own carrot cake. Use a spice cake mix and add grated carrots, or start from scratch by making a homemade carrot cake. Top the cake with cream cheese or white frosting. Allow the kids to decorate the carrot cake by piping carrot shapes onto the top of the cake.

Pumpkin Cupcakes

Make spice cake cupcakes using a boxed cake mix and the necessary ingredients. Bake the cupcakes in the oven as directed on the packaging and allow them to cool before decorating. Have the kids mix orange food coloring with cream cheese or white frosting and then decorate the cupcakes with the orange frosting. Use pretzel sticks or nuggets to create stems on the pumpkins; add small gumdrops for leaves.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Save the pumpkin seeds when the kids are carving their jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. Sprinkle the seeds with a couple of teaspoons of oil and some salt. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes. Allow the kids to add nuts, dried fruit and small candies to the roasted pumpkin seeds to create their own snack mix.
