Easy Deck Cleaning

Step 1

Remove all items from the deck. Sweep the deck with a push broom to remove pine needles, leaves and loose dirt.

Step 2

Mix 6 oz. powdered oxygen bleach with 1 gallon warm water in a 3-gallon plastic bucket. Stir the solution with a toilet brush. Wait five minutes for the oxygen bleach to dissolve.

Step 3

Pour the bleach solution into a hand pump sprayer. Gently shake the sprayer to dissolve any remaining powder particles.

Step 4

Spray a generous amount of the solution onto the deck's rails. Scrub the rails lightly with the toilet brush.

Step 5

Spray a generous amount of the solution onto the decking. Scrub the decking with a stiff bristled telescoping pole brush. Use a small brush to scrub between decking boards.

Step 6

Rinse the decking and rails with a garden hose. Use standard nozzle pressure to rinse the deck, not a pressure washer. Pressure washers can erode and crack the wood.

Step 7

Inspect the deck for remaining dirt and grime. If the deck remains dirty, repeat the entire cleaning process. Otherwise, allow the deck to air dry.
