Easy and Quick Hairstyles for Little Girls

New 'Do

Between work, school and other commitments that make most days a time crunch, it’s easy to stick with the same tried-and-true hairstyle that can be done in your sleep when getting your little girl ready for school or a party. But adding more looks into the mix doesn’t mean spending an hour in front of a mirror while she fidgets in her chair. If your daughter is in a hair rut, some quick, no-fuss techniques are easy for both of you to learn and will add some oomph to her locks.

Low Ponytail

This is perfect for a little girl who wants a more grownup ponytail look. Pull your daughter’s hair back and gather with a hair tie or elastic band, but not a rubber band, which causes breakage, said Kendall Ong, owner of Mane Attraction Salon in Phoenix. “Take a small section of hair in the ponytail and wrap it around to hide the band. Pin down the ends of that small section.”

Cut the toe off a sock and roll it until it resembles a doughnut. Then put your daughter's hair in a high ponytail and pull the hair halfway through the top of the sock doughnut. Then roll the hair down with the sock to the base of the ponytail. “This will create a perfect ballerina bun, which is a new trendy style for young girls,” said Veronica Nazzaro-Penzone, owner of Beauty by Veronica salon in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Cute and innocently flirty, this style can be done by you in no time or by your daughter in just a little time. Curl or straighten her hair, whichever she prefers, and take one side of the hair and clip it back with a flower or your daughter’s favorite fun and trendy clip to add her own little “something,” said Betsy Bakken, stylist at Beauty by Veronica.

Twisted or Braided Bangs

For twisted or braided bangs, start by sectioning off the bangs area from the rest of the hair, suggested Megan Kinkead, stylist at Beauty by Veronica. Twist the bangs back away from her face and put a bobby pin directly up into the twist that will secure the hair and will also make the bobby pin not visible. For braided bangs, divide the bangs into three pieces and do a regular braid back away from the face. Stick the bobby pin directly up in to it to secure it in place.

Slick

On damp hair, apply a moisturizing conditioner. “This is better than gel because you get the benefits of healthier hair and a soft texture,” Ong said. Using a large-tooth comb, part hair on either the side or down the center. Next, comb your daughter’s hair away from her face while tucking it behind her ears. If she prefers a little texture, twist the ends with your fingers. Let hair air-dry. For a tousled look, she can brush her hair out with her fingers once it’s dry.

Messy Bun

Nazzaro-Penzone suggested this trendy and versatile style. Pull her hair into a back ponytail and hold it in place with your hand. Wrap an elastic band around it as you would a regular ponytail, except on the last rotation pull her hair halfway through to create a bun. Depending on the length of your daughter’s hair, the loose pieces at the bottom of the bun can be shifted to the top and teased for a wispy look or secured with bobby pins for a more pulled-together vibe.

Dry Curls

Instead of using a curling iron in the traditional manner, get a more twisted effect by wrapping the hair around the barrel of the curling iron, Bakken recommended. For a tighter curl, use smaller sections of hair. For a looser, wavier effect, wrap larger pieces around the barrel. “This is just an easier way without having to feed the hair through the curling iron,” Bakken said.

Give the typical curly look a rock-star edge. Apply a generous amount of gel or mousse evenly throughout freshly shampooed and towel-dried hair, Kinkead said. Then, with your blow dryer on the low setting, dry hair while scrunching up sections of it with your hands. “If more curl is needed when it’s all dry, use the curling iron as needed,” Kinkead said.

Front Poof

A front poof can be done with either straight or curly hair, Nazzaro-Penzone said. Take hair from above your daughter’s eyebrows and back-comb the amount of hair you’d liked to pin back for your poof. “Smooth out the back-combing and bobby pin the shape into place by using two or more bobby pins,” she said.
