Born in 1910, Dorothy Hodgkin was introduced to chemistry at a young age by her father's friend. Later as an established biochemist, Hodgkin perfected X-ray crystallography which allowed researchers to see biomolecules in 3-D. She was later able to verify the exact structures of penicillin as well as vitamin B12, which earned her the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Aung San Suu Kyi

Daughter of Burmese independence hero General Aung San, this diplomat and politician led a revolt against Myanmar's dictator General Ne Win in 1988, which resulted in military supression and a 15 year house arrest. After her release, Aung San Suu Kyi was elected State Counsellor of Myanmar as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister to the President's Office. She received the Nobel Peace Price, a Congressional Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among other notable awards for her work as a humanitarian and inspiring political leader.

Frida Kahlo

This well-known Mexican self-portrait painter was unapologetic in her individuality. Kahlo believed in equality between men and women, and disliked established gender norms. She proudly wore her unibrow, which was typically viewed as "masculine" and was known to drink, smoke, curse and wear the fashion of men—as well as women, when it suited her. Her work is widely recognized as some of the greatest surrealist works (which she herself considered "realist") of art in the world.

Amelia Earhart

This well-known pilot was both an author and an aviator. She is the first woman in history to have ever flown on her own across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart later attempted another feat, traveling across the entire globe, but sadly disappeared over the Pacific somewhere near Howland Island. Her name inspires awe and wonder, and even if the mystery of her disappearance is never fully solved (recent evidence indicates Earhart and her navigator, Noonan, crash-landed near Gardner Island and survived for a short while before succumbing to the elements), many regard her as proof that women are capable of true greatness.

Amrita Pritam

This poet, essayist and novelist is considered the first Punjabi woman to achieve prominence in her career as a writer. She is beloved by many and known for her poem "Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu," meaning "Ode to Waris Shah" which expressed deep anger and sadness over the massacres during the India and Pakistan partition of 1947, which resulted in the loss of more than a million lives. Her most famous work, "Pinjar," meaning "The Cage" is regarded as a poignant, painful novel detailing the hopeless violence against the women of her country.

Eleanor Roosevelt

She was the first lady of President Frankin D. Roosevelt and used her position as FLOTUS to expand opportunities for future first ladies. Although her husband denied her the opportunity to become his self-appointed administrative assistant, she instead set her sights on reducing the White House budget and opened her door weekly to female reporters to discuss current issues. She was the first white member of the Washington D.C. chapter of the NAACP, and actively worked for legislation that eliminated racism. She was a human rights advocate and a columnist, and dedicated her life to making the world a better place for minorities and women.

Most known for her work on screen as a prominent actress, Union also works as an anti-rape advocate and uses her personal story of sexual assualt to highlight the importance of rape prevention and laws that help protect victims. She has testified before Congress about her harrowing experience which included being raped at gunpoint and viciously beaten by her attacker. Today, Union travels extensively around the world to speak about issues affecting women, including breast cancer, a lack of equal opportunity in education and sexual assualt.

Grace Hopper

Often called "Amazing Grace," Hopper served as a United States Navy Rear Admiral and computer scientist. She is credited with creating the first compiler for a computer to translate a type of computing language, which later led to the development of executable computer programs. Her expertise in computer programming and mathematics is evidence that women are fully capable in STEM subjects like math, science and engineering, as well as military service, and can contribute greatly to advancements in technology.

This Venezuelan clothing maven is known for dressing some of the world's most important women, including first ladies Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Michelle Obama. Today, she serves as the creative head for her company and continues to define the ever-changing world of fashion.

Wu Zetian

Also known as Empress Wu and Tian Hou, she was the first and only Empress of China in over four thousand years. She began as a regal concubine for Emperor Taizong, and upon his death, married his son Emporer Gaozong. When her husband suffered a stroke in 660 CE, Empress Wu took the title of administrator of the court, which gave her the abilities of emperor, until 705 CE. She was renowned for her literary and historical knowledge, which led to her being considered a great ruler of unified China. She gave birth to four sons, three of which later became emperors as well.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton, Justice Bader-Ginsburg is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and the second-ever female to serve. She is the co-founder of the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and has passionately argued for the reproductive rights of women. Considered a Liberal, Justice Bader-Ginsburg is not afraid of thinking outside the box when it comes to interpreting law. She currently is one of three women serving on the Supreme Court, alongside Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.
