Step 1
Visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's FishWatch website to familiarize yourself with general criteria for sustainable seafood.
Step 2
Review consumer purchasing guidelines provided by non-profit organizations involved in seafood sustainability. Marine Stewardship Council, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Greenpeace offer Fish to Eat, Seafood Watch, and Greenpeace International Seafood Red List, respectively.
Step 3
Buy and eat sustainable fish based on your research. Seafood Watch recommends many fish as best choices, including: abalone (U.S. farmed); catfish (U.S. farmed); giant clam/geoduck (wild-caught); Caribbean spiny lobster (Florida); mussels (farmed); salmon (Alaska wild-caught); sea urchin roe (Canada); rainbow trout (farmed); and white seabass.
