There are many benefits to practicing yoga and you can enjoy them no matter your body type or size. Moms need yoga in their life because it's a great balance of physical activity and mental clarity. Through yoga, you can become stronger, more flexible, and discover awareness of your body, moods and mental states.

Time for Yourself

It's hard for moms to find time for ourselves and when we do, we might feel tempted to get some work done or catch a nap. I don't have much free time, but I make time for yoga because it makes me feel centered, thus improving my day overall. I'll unfurl my mat early in the morning, during naptime, or I'll attend an evening class.

A Yoga Mat

This one is essential. You need something soft and grippy to do yoga, both because it protects your back and knees from hard floors and it helps stabilize some of the positions. I personally like a 5-mm mat because it's thick but still easy to roll and carry with you to class.

A Yoga Block

Can you touch your toes? If you can't, don't worry. We can all build strength and flexibility through yoga no matter where we begin. A yoga block can you get deeper stretches, help you accommodate more challenging poses, or help you feel a little more balanced. Get one or two.

Cute Yoga Tops

You can practice yoga in any of your loose tees, but there's plenty of stylish yoga gear. This ombré tank is breezy and looks beautiful with a contrasting sports bra.

Cool Sports Bras

When my activewear is fun, I'm more likely to use it. I like bright sports bras that peek out of tanks. Since yoga is low impact, you can get away with one that has light or medium support.

Slip-On Sandals

If you're going to a yoga studio, sandals you can slip off easily are your best bet. I like Birkenstocks, not just because they're back in style, but also because they're ultra-comfy and look great with activewear.

To buy: Zappos, $135

Finding the Right Style

There are many styles of yoga and the right one depends on your needs. Not flexible at all? Try a restorative or gentle yoga class. Interested in finding out something new about yourself through movement and meditation? Look into kundalini yoga. Like the sound of exhilarating poses that flow into one another? Look into a beginner vinyasa class.

Yoga is performed barefoot, so it's a great excuse for getting regular pedicures. Whether you go to a salon or take care of your toes at home, you'll have a nice view when you do your forward bends.
