How to Accessorize a Black Dress

Step 1

Add some bling. Put your favorite dainty necklace back in the jewelry box and amp up the look of your little black dress by wearing a wide herringbone chain necklace or an overstated, sparkly faux rhinestone choker. Drawing all eyes to your neckline makes onlookers forget they saw you in that same LBD a few weeks ago. For an understated, elegant look, slip on a string of ivory, white or black Tahitian pearls.

Step 2

Layer your look to add warmth. If you're giving your LBD a whirl in the cool weather, slip a bolero, fitted jacket or thick, woven shawl over your dress. For added warmth, pair the look with tights. Grab attention with a pair of cherry red tights with black stiletto heels. Thick, black wool tights make your look simple and office ready.

Step 3

Make your LBD a secondary garment. Slip a pair of skinny denim jeans under a short, loose-fitting LBD for a casual, tunic-inspired Bohemian appearance. Top the look with a colorful head scarf, layers of long beaded necklaces and an oversized handbag worthy of hauling a week's supply of groceries.

Step 4

Change the initial appearance of the black dress. Change a spaghetti-strap LBD to a short-sleeved frock by layering a favorite solid-colored T-shirt underneath. If snowflakes are swirling, add a long-sleeve tunic to the black dress. Stick with a coordinating shade of black for a subdued look or choose a bold animal print.
