Designing A Mom Life: The Importance of Women Friends

As we skate into May and this year flashes before our eyes, I'm excited to talk about my third New Year's Resolution to surround myself with more creative and inspiring women. (Also check out my first and second resolutions!)

If you know my story, then you already know that I was raised by a single mom. Enough said, right? By far, the hardest job in the world! I give it up to all the single mamas out there, you are amazing! My mom inspired me daily to be a better daughter, a smarter student, a good friend. Of course, I had my moments, like all teenagers do, but all in all I was a good kid and I owe that to her. She forced me to attend an all-girls high school, which terrified me at first, then turned out to be the best experience ever. I was constantly building relationships with smart, creative, like-minded friends in school, sports and politics. It was my "norm."

Fast-forward to my life before having my girls, being in a career where traveling is a constant, working with a new team of people for every project and living in cities away from family and best friends. I lost that feeling of connection. Then, after having kids, it became even harder to make those lasting relationships with new people (because frankly, who has the time). Yet, let's face it, as a mom, it is so refreshing to connect with other inspiring moms who help push you in the right direction or set an example which in turn helps us to push ourselves!

That's why this year, as I build a new business separate from any career I've ever known, I am allowing myself the time and energy to surround myself with more creative and inspiring mamas! I want to connect with women who get me, who understand my struggle, who know how hard it is to change a diaper on a conference call or edit pictures while breastfeeding! These women are superstars, pushing boundaries and getting it done every day! I want to know that having it all is possible—maybe not always pretty but still possible. I want to expand my support system of moms while encouraging other mamas!

So naturally I was super pumped when Club Momme and Mom.me invited me to attend their Spring Fest this past weekend! At every turn, there were these millennial moms who looked amazing, were having fun with their children, and were knowledgeable and curious about all the new, inventive products being featured for families. I was honored to connect with so many like-minded mamas, bounce ideas and offer suggestions. It was also awesome listening to other mom bosses, like Joy Cho of Oh Joy, share their stories of success.

It may not be easy but in order to keep this New Year's resolution going, I vow:

  • Make the time to connect
  • Attend more events and gatherings with like-minded mamas
  • Search out fun activities with the kids and engage with other moms
  • Join mom groups on Facebook with similar interests

How do you stay connected or meet other mamas? Please share your suggestions in the comments below.
