My daughters inherited my long brown hair and my zero tolerance for knots and tangles. Like young me, they’d scream when I brushed their hair, with every knot and tangle pull feeling as if someone is yanking hard on their tresses. I would dread our morning and bedtime routines, when bows and hair bands were removed, and it was time to brush every knot out of my girls’ hair while they winced in pain, making me feel like Queen Mean Mommy.
Knot buds
I can relate — I was that kid. I had long thick hair (almost down to my bum) that was always knotty and tangled, and my kids are me version 2.0 and 3.0. Don’t get me wrong, I combed my hair well, and remember my mom spraying my hair every night with “No More Tangles.” But the tangles prevailed.
Of course, brushes and tangle sprays of today are way better than they ever were when I was a knotty mess in the 1980s. And I’m grateful to the Wet Brush, Raw Sugar detangler spray, and my mom friend, Stacy, for making hair-combing easier on me — and my daughters. Because it was Stacy, a fellow girl mom, who asked me why the heck I didn’t own a Wet Brush in the first place when I vented to her about how much my girls hate brushing their hair.
Ode to the comb
My kids each have the Wet Brush Original Detangler with a Frozen 2 design on it. Honestly, I don’t know what it is about this brush, but when we bought it last year, it was an absolute game-changer. Yes, it’s plastic, but its super soft and springy bristles can be used on wet or dry hair, and the brush glides through knots and tangles with ease. I never feel like my girls are pulling chunks of their hair out with this brush. Less tears for all! We’re all such fans I bought one for myself.
Spray-in support
There’s a catch — and remember, my girls are super knotty, so I obviously can’t speak for all kids. I use this brush in conjunction with a specific detangler. We had tried so many detangling sprays, and very few worked and also made my kids’ hair look greasy, so when we finally found the magic one that worked, we never looked back.
Our fave is the Raw Sugar Kids Strawberry + Oat Leave-in Conditioner and Detangler. I spray it right on their hair, let it sit, and then use the Wet Brush to attack the knots, and again, no tears, no screams, and no greasy residue. Yes, brushes and detanglers have been around for decades, but they took a long time to effectively comb out those tangles and knots.
So, there you have it, if you’re fighting the tangle battle with your long-haired kids, combine the Wet Brush with the Raw Sugar Spray and voilà! Smooth, easy-to-comb, and knot-free hair that will make your kiddo’s daily prep much easier, much more fun — and save your sanity as well.
