Looks like public displays of shaming your kid are all the rage these days. There was that dad who wore short shorts out to dinner to teach his daughter a lesson about showing too much skin. Then there was the mom who sold her daughters' One Direction tickets online as punishment for their "lippy attitude."
But those tales are pretty tame compared to this latest story of public shaming, which is getting some mixed reactions.
According to KCEN-TV, Texas dad Jose Lagares wasn't too pleased with his son after he was caught bullying classmates several times. So he decided on an unconventional form of punishment for the 4th grader: He had his son stand on a street corner holding a sign that read, "I am a bully. Honk if you hate bullies." (Clearly, Lagares is a graduate from the School of Hard Knocks.)
The dad may have intended to better his son by giving him a taste of his own medicine and belittling him in the public the way he did others. But so far, the response isn't all supportive of Lagares's tactics. KCENTV's Facebook page has since received tons of comments on the story, with many questioning just what kind of a lesson the dad was teaching here, anyway—and whether or not it will have a negative impact on the child.
But Lagares stands by his decision, even returning to the same street corner two days later with his own sign. It read: "I'm not sorry. Honk to stop bullying."
