California mom Mary Shinn says she uses the fact that she works at a school to open up a dialogue with her son about discrimination against LGBTQ kids. “I work in the school system but not the one my son attends,” she told Mom.com. “I will start with sharing something going on in my building, such as bullying a child, and ask if anything like that has happened in his high school.”
Films are another great way to start conversations in the house. Paul Andrés Trudel-Payne from The Dada Diary told Mom.com, “I like to recommend films that can make a child feel included by identifying with the main character or experience, while also letting parents, family members, and allies get a realistic idea of what this child might be going through or has gone through.”

'Unpregnant'

A film that tackles two popular issues in today’s society: teen abortion and being queer. In this film, Veronica finds out she is pregnant and wants an abortion. However, she can’t get one without parental consent in her home state of Missouri. She embarks on a road trip to New Mexico with Bailey who is queer and dealing with her own life’s problems.
'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'

The story of queer blues legend Ma Rainey features Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman in his final role. This film not only deals with the struggles of a queer woman to succeed but also the difficulties that black stars had to deal with at the turn of the 19th century. It’s a look back at the trailblazing journey Ma Rainey had.
'The Old Guard'

An action film with a queer twist. A group of immortal warriors fights to change the world in good ways, fighting evil. As the warriors fight their causes, we see the leader, Andy reminisce about a deep connection she had with a woman. The movie gives the feeling that Andy is transgender; at the same time, there is a male-male relationship between Joe and Nicky, two soldiers from two different eras who stay together for several hundred years.
'Love, Simon'

A 2018 coming of age movie that captures both the humor and difficulty of being a gay teenager. This is a film about falling in love but, in order to do so, you must fall in love with all of yourself first. What’s poignant about this movie is the moment that Simon shares being gay with his parents, who choose to love their son rather than admonish him in any way.
'The Kids Are All Right'

This film tells the story of two women who have raised their children, who are now teenagers, in a two-mom household. The children find their biological father, who becomes a figure in their lives and becomes romantically involved with one of their moms. This 2010 tale gives an honest depiction of the complexities of raising children as a same-sex couple that, in the end, gives viewers insight into the beauty of loving your children no matter what the family dynamic is.
'Breakfast With Scot'

This is the story of a closeted retired hockey player turned sportscaster who suddenly becomes the guardian of his nephew. This film tackles the challenges of keeping your true self a secret to the world, the fear involved, and ultimately, learning to love yourself so much that none of it matters. It was believed to be the first time a professional sports league and team — the NHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs — allowed their names to be used in a film that centered around the topic of homosexuality.

'Flee'

This is an animated documentary about a man, Amin Nawabi, who flees Afghanistan and goes to Denmark to start a new life. It reflects on Nawabi’s painful past as he prepares to marry his soon-to-be-husband. It gives a telling account of the problems with being gay in a culture where it is explicitly forbidden.
'A Secret Love'

This 2020 documentary shows the strides made in the LGBTQ+ community over the past 50 years through the eyes of two women who have been together since they met in the 1940s during the war. For decades, they kept their love a secret, telling others that they were cousins rather than a couple. The couple experiences difficulties in coming out later in life, but their relationship remains triumphant.
'Suited'

If you’re looking for real-life heroes, Suited is a 2016 documentary that chronicles six clients of New York’s Bindle & Keep, a tailoring company that specializes in making custom clothing for those transitioning. This is a show about embracing your own style as you embrace your own identity.
'The Most Dangerous Year'

The year 2016 has been identified as the most dangerous year for transgender Americans as a series of anti-transgender “bathroom bills” swept across the county. This film documents a group of parents who fought these bills that aimed to take the rights away from their transgender children. It is a film about the passion and power that parents have for their children regardless of their sexual orientation.
'All in My Family'

One of the LGBT movies on Netflix, this is a documentary telling the story of a gay filmmaker who was raised by traditional Chinese parents. While he has come out to his immediate family, he records the journey back to China with his young children. This is an honest look at a man opening up in the most conservative of cultures to be embraced by his family’s love.

'The Half of It'

Ellie Chu is an honors student with a side hustle of writing papers for other students. Football star, Paul, hires her to write love letters to his crush, Aster. As Ellie takes to the task, she starts to unpack her deep feelings for Aster as well. This love triangle is a modern-day twist of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac.
'The Boys in the Band'

This is a modern day remake of the 1970s film of the same name. It is set in an Upper East Side apartment where a group of gay friends gather for a birthday party. The fun takes a turn for the worse as the nine men become increasingly drunk. The climax of the story is when a game starts and the men must make a call to someone they have loved and confess it.
'Touch of Pink'

A young man raised in a conservative family, Touch of Pink dives deep into the cultural obstacles faced by many LGBTQ+ individuals. The main character is born in Kenya but raised in Toronto and moves to London to find acceptance. This film uses comedy to introduce the struggles of a gay man.
'Freak Show'

A high-school coming-of-age story about homophobia in high school when a LGBTQ+ boy is transferred to an ultra-conservative high school. This film tackles the struggles of a teenager from bullies as he stands strong with who he is, unique and fearless. This film uses humor to address serious issues young LGBTQ+ children face.
'G.B.F.'

The popular girls decide to unleash a plot to find a gay best friend (GBF) in order to improve their chances of winning the prom queen seat. In the process, one boy is forced to out himself in front of the whole school. Through a whirlwind of misguided steps, this group of teens realize that true friends accept all parts of each other.
