When it comes to a mother's love for her son, absolutely nothing can stand in the way โ not even the Mormon church. At least, that's what David Archuleta's mom says. The American Idol contestant opened up about how his mother left the church after he came out as gay during a new interview with People magazine.

David shared the story while he was at a fundraising event
The singer opened up about coming out to his mother, Lupe Marie Mayorga, back in 2014. To hear David tell it, his mother's initial reaction to the news wasn't great.
"My mom had a hard time accepting my journey. At first, she said, 'DA, I love you, but I love God more. And marriage is between a man and a woman.' And I'm like, 'Mom, I understand.' Because that's what I believed up until a month before coming out," he explained.
He knew his mother needed some time, so he gave it to her
"And I said, 'Mom, I don't need you to accept everything about my journey immediately," David continued. "I just want you to be willing to walk along with me in this journey to learn alongside me. And she said, 'OK, I can do that.'"
That must've been exactly what Lupe needed to hear, because a short time later she was dropping her own big news.
Lupe knew that she ultimately had to leave the church behind to support her son
David's mom said she made a major decision to support her son.
"My mom said, 'I'm going to step away from the church.' And I was like, 'What?' And she just said, 'If you're going to hell, we're all going to hell together,'" he recalled. "She just kind of said it in a funny way."
"It was sweet that she said, 'I'm with you wherever you go,'" David continued. "That was really sweet."
David marveled over how far his mom had come

While David didn't say exactly how long it took Lupe to change her tune about her faith, he did explain just how proud he was to see her opening her mind the way she did.
"It was really sweet to see her now at the point where she said, 'I don't want to leave my family just to follow God.' She's like, 'I can follow God and accept my son,'" he added.

Their changing relationship may have gotten off to a bumpy start, but it's clear now that there's nothing that can come between David and Lupe.
Hopefully his story helps some other families, too.
