For some lucky women, pregnancy is a magical time. They have the adorable, basketball-shaped belly and that dreamy pregnancy glow. They feel curvy, extra cute, and womanly. They may rock their maternity photo shoots and breeze through labor and delivery. Those women, and the celebs who fall into that group, are lucky to be sure.
But there's another group of pregnant people who are, well, not quite so blessed. The only glow they get is from sweating, and they are pregnant from head to swollen ankle.
Pregnancy is such an emotional time, and it can be easy for a woman to think that there is something wrong with her if she doesn't love being pregnant or even wishes she could just fast-forward to the part where the baby arrives and she isn't pregnant anymore. The good news is that hating pregnancy doesn't translate to the ability to love being a mother and being darn good at it.
It's always good to normalize that pregnancy can be both a glorious and a deeply uncomfortable experience (and sometimes both at the same time!), so we're giving a shout-out to 15 famous mamas who were willing to keep it real and share that they hated pregnancy. Read on for some super-relatable reasons some of our favorite celebs hated being pregnant.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian seems to find a lot of joy in being a mother to four, but she's been brutally honest about how hard pregnancy was on her. She's shared that she struggled with feelings of being body-shamed on social media, as well as with really painful pregnancy conditions like preeclampsia. In her words, "It really broke me."
Amy Schumer
For funnywoman Amy Schumer, pregnancy was anything but a laughing matter. She suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, which is an extreme form of "morning sickness." As she shared, "I threw up violently and felt sick mostly every day of my pregnancy. Hyperemesis is real and it's awful." She's also shared that while she'd like to have another child, she'll never go through pregnancy again because the experience was so miserable.
Jessie James Decker
Country singer Jessie James Decker is a great example of how different every pregnancy can be. She has three childern and has said that her first pregnancy was "brutal" because of "horrible morning sickness" but that her second was much smoother.
Amber Rose
Model and influencer Amber Rose is another famous mom who had to deal with hyperemesis gravidarum. During her second pregnancy, she reflected on how hard it was, saying, "It's really, really hard being pregnant — I'm not gonna lie. To all the women out there who just pop out babies like it's nothing, God bless you guys, 'cause oh my God, it is just a lot."
Gwyneth Paltrow
Actress and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow is all about having an aspirational, organic, expensive life, but even she isn't immune to the challenges of pregnancy. During a Goop virtual summit, she shared, "I had a hard time being pregnant. I mean, it's obviously beyond worth it. But I was very nauseous and sick for both. And my babies were huge. So it was kind of not that comfortable." She's also said that she almost died having her first child, so it isn't too surprising that she's not the biggest fan of being pregnant.
Eva Longoria
Eva Longoria hasn't officially said that she hated being pregnant, but she was open about the challenges of carrying a baby at 43 when she chatted with Jimmy Kimmel in 2018. "Everything's uncomfortable. It's not just your belly — everything gets bigger," she told the late-night host. "I've never seen my thighs so big, and my boobs, they're in the way of everything. It's hard."
Zoe Saldana
Actress and mother-of-three (including a set of twins) Zoe Saldana was one celebrity who experienced pregnancy and delivery as a major challenge. She has described the experience of having her twins as "a kind of trauma" that made bouncing back "feel impossible."
Kelly Clarkson
Singer and The Voice host Kelly Clarkson is so funny and relatable, especially for those who don't love being pregnant. She's shared that she will "never, ever do it again" and that her body just isn't "meant to be pregnant," so she has no plans to go down that road again.
Mariah Carey
Pop diva Mariah Carey has described her pregnancy with twins Moroccan and Monroe as "bleak" and "so uncomfortable for me." She also even said that she wouldn't let her then-husband Nick Cannon see her pregnant body because she didn't want him to see her "looking rancid like that," which is some pretty cruel self-talk.
Kate Hudson
Fashion enthusiast Kate Hudson was blunt in an interview with InStyle magazine about her feelings on pregnancy: "I hate it. I'm usually an A cup and I'm getting close to a D cup. I love fashion, and having big breasts is not ideal."
Tamar Braxton
Reality star and singer Tamar Braxton wasn't shy about her plans to be one and done following the birth of her son, telling Flaunt magazine, "I'm not having any kids in the future. I hated being pregnant. I felt like Invasion of the Body Snatchers." Although the interview was done in 2013, Tamar must have meant it, because her son is still an only child.
Angie Harmon
Actress Angie Harmon is another mom who can testify to the fact that every pregnancy is different. She shared with Pregnancy magazine in 2009 that her third pregnancy was "horrible" and that she never had "two good days in a row" as a result of morning sickness, anemia, and a torn disc in her back.
Jamie Pressly
It's safe to say that My Name Is Earl star Jamie Pressly is no fan of being pregnant. She was once quoted as saying that pregnancy "sucked" and that it was "the biggest killer for me. I hated it — I hated being fat." Again, we appreciate the honesty but yikes, that is some negative self-talk that ended up leading to her feeling like she needed to bounce back quickly so she could be a "sexy mom."
Melissa Joan Hart
Melissa Joan Hart loves being a mom to three boys, but she is also a member of the pregnancy hating team. As she shared with OK! magazine, "I hated it. I just hated it. It is so uncomfortable, and you just feel so out of sorts. I love being a mom, but I don't like being pregnant."
Jenni Farley (JWoww)
It's pretty safe to assume that a person doesn't end up starring on Jersey Shore by being too subtle, so it probably isn't a surprise that JWoww was characteristically blunt in 2014 when it comes to thoughts on pregnancy. She said, "I f—ing hate it. I'm not a fan."
