When Can a Baby Get Bathed After Circumcision?

A baby should not be submerged in water until the circumcision site has formed a scab, which typically takes four to five days after the surgery, says Dr. Christie Frakes, Arizona-based pediatrician and medical consultant with MVP Kids Care. The timing of the circumcision also plays a role in bathing routines. For example, if your child is circumcised a day or two after birth, you must also wait until the umbilical cord falls off before bathing your baby in a tub of water. Instead of baths, parents can gently wash a baby's penis with a warm washcloth after each diaper change and gently pat his penis dry, says Frakes.
