How to Keep a Newborn Awake to Nurse

To keep a newborn awake during nursing, remove his blanket and clothing, and keep him only in his diaper, advises pediatrician Jennifer Gardner, founder of the online child wellness site Healthy Kids Company. "This is great for skin-to-skin contact, while encouraging the baby to remain alert," she notes. "If it's too cold for skin-to-skin contact, unswaddle the baby, but leave a onesie on," she adds. Other suggestions include talking or singing to the baby, gently tickling his feet or blowing on his face, sitting him more upright, or turning on a soft light. Avoid rocking the baby during nursing, as this can make him fall asleep more quickly.
