10 Songs On My Soundtrack of Motherhood

My kids and I are constantly humming a tune. Sometimes it's the SuperWhy theme song and often it's Taylor Swift. Seriously, what 4-year-old isn't obsessed with "Shake It Off"? Whatever it is, we've got a song in our hearts and a beat in our step most days. It lifts the mood and keeps me sane. And truly, staying sane is a big part of motherhood, amiright?

From that search for sanity I birthed a playlist of songs about motherhood to lighten the mood, warm my heart and give me a little laugh amongst the craziness. Sing along with me!

"Here Comes the Sun" – The Beatles

Am I the only one with babes who rise with the sun? I think not. So, here comes the sun—and a scurry of tiny little feet begging for breakfast.

"L-O-V-E" – Nat King Cole

Love songs so easily morph into motherhood songs and this one always comes to mind when I stare into the precious little eyes of my babies.

"Wannabe" – Spice Girls

1996 represent while we all sing " … tell me what you want, what you really, really want" to those confused little toddlers who can't make up their minds. Or worse, change them at record speed. It's just so fitting to give them a little crazy back while they decide on what they want for lunch. I mean, is it bananas or applesauce? No, wait, berries and crackers? Oh, I get it… you want berries and crackers IN yogurt. Now we're talking. I get what you want, little one.

"Stronger" – Kelly Clarkson

Truly, what doesn't kill me makes me stronger. And we can all add sleepless nights, tantrums, injuries, explosive messes, illness and general worry that will last a lifetime to our list of strength builders.

"Jesus, Take the Wheel" – Carrie Underwood

Those country gals really get moms. When I hit a hump in the day, need a nap or want to quit and hop a plane to Hawaii, by all means, Jesus, you're on carpool duty.

"Baby Mine" – Dumbo, Frank Churchill and Ned Washington

Motherhood is full of tears and if any song is going to turn on the waterworks it's going to be this one. Or, Phil Collin's, "You'll Be In My Heart". Total toss up with me. Pass the tissues. The whole box.

"Knockin' On Heavens Door" – Bob Dylan

You can sing the traditional song, or put the mom spin on it and croon, "knock, knock, knockin' on the bathroom door". That's more my reality. My son has even taken it to the next level with body slams mixed in with his knocking. Come on, buddy! Mama just wants to pee without an audience!

"Raise Your Glass" – PINK

One, I need a cocktail. Two, I'm that imperfect mom who is often " … wrong, in all the right ways". Although, I may have to bump this song to the encore CD—the one that's special for after bedtime hours. Singing curse words never bodes well when the kids start humming their mama's soundtrack in the middle of Sunday School.

"Let It Go" – Idina Menzel

I'd be remiss to leave out the motherhood song of the decade. A mantra we all need to hear often, loud and while wearing beautiful ball gowns (yoga pants) and dancing throughout our ice castles (kitchens.)

What songs would you add onto your soundtrack of motherhood? I can't wait to hear what songs speak to your heart and soul!
