‘The Pitt’ Fans Fire Back at Noah Wyle’s ‘Wildly Offensive’ Comment About Moms Working in Hospitals

Since its debut, The Pitt has quickly become one of my favorite shows. I find it to be compelling from a storytelling perspective, and I love the format of each season taking place over the course of one shift. The cast is diverse, and I like that it’s more about what’s happening in the ER and not as much about the lives of the characters outside of work. Plus, I’m a fan of star Noah Wyle and have been since his days on E.R. Recently, Wyle got himself in hot water with fans of the show when he made a comment about why the show’s night shift likely won’t get a spin-off.

The point he was trying to make didn’t quite land.

During a recent interview on Warner Bros. podcast A Lot More, Wyle and host Jonathon Buckley discussed ways the show could progress as subsequent seasons are created. Buckley mentioned that a lot of fans were really invested in the idea of a spin-off of the show featuring the doctors of the night shift.

Currently, we only get glimpses of the night shift doctors, including Jack Abbott, played by Shawn Hatosy and Parker Ellis, played by Ayesha Harris, when the episode’s story necessitates a shift crossover.

When asked if there was a possibility for a spin-off, Wyle’s response was surprising.

“You know who works mostly night shift? Mothers,” he said. “Because they like to be free for their kids and home during the day. So it’s a lot less wild and wooly, and a lot more boring and sedate.”

People are not happy with his comment.

After saying that, he explained that he had no real interest in creating a spin-off so soon into the run of The Pitt, which is probably where his answer should have started instead of trying to call moms working the night shift “boring.”

The quote made it to X, where people didn’t waste time ripping Noah Wyle to shreds.

One person wrote “Yeah okay so this is wildly offensive and weird on multiple levels.” They continued, writing, “AND it’s simply not what the show has portrayed so far so much for rEaLiSM™.”

“Is this just a wild speculation on his part? Like what?” another person commented.

Another person pointed out, “leaving aside how offensive and weird it is (which is hard to do because it’s wildly offensive and weird) it’s also totally wrong, both in reality and in the show?”

“It’s such a sexist view of mothers as solely caretakers that can just girlboss through this. I’ve seen what working nights as a single mother can do to someone and the last word i would use to describe it is boring,” someone else wrote.

A different comment read “the idea of calling working moms boring when you literally have cassie mckay as a character like i don’t even think he knows what he’s writing anymore.”

The Noah Wyle hate train didn’t stop there.

“What I’m hearing is ‘no one cares about mothers or women’ which is crazy in a lot of ways not the least of which being there is only one female doctor on the night shift ??? Like pal this isn’t even a possibility of an issue for you!”

Speaking about Wyle’s previous reasons for creating the show, someone wrote “love letter to healthcare workers unless you’re a woman who, like my mom, worked 60+ hour weeks as a night shift nurse to raise her children ok yeah.”

“i just cannot wrap my head around this bec we actually have al-hashimi, mckay and dana; who are mothers. we had collins, whose storyline was based in wanting to be a mother. we also have langdon, who is a father. robby himself contemplates taking baby jane doe,” another commenter wrote.

“This is offensive to Cassie Mckay and literally Every mother in the Pitt and every mother ever.”
