Potty training is no joke. Every child is different, so what works for some may not work for others. As parents quickly learn, using the toilet is tougher than it seems. Find helpful hints on how to make your child's transition from diapers a smooth one, based on their individual astrology.

Make it a challenge

Independent Aries gets bored when things are repetitive. Instead of making potty training a regimented ritual, turn it into a fun game that involves challenges. Learning to do things for themselves, such as removing their clothes, using tissue and flushing the toilet (followed by verbal recognition for their achievements), will inspire your active Aries child to master potty training like a champ.

Give them rewards

Taurus children love earning prizes and treats to mark their accomplishments. Use their favorite rewards, such as games, snacks or toys, to encourage them to use the toilet like big kids. Make sure to be consistent and always follow through with a promised prize, as Taurus children aren't forgetful and are likely to regress if the reward isn't delivered.

Make the bathroom a reading nook

Smart Gemini children love multitasking and will sit still if there's an interesting book being read to them or available for them to look at. Since this sign is a strong learner, having age-appropriate potty-training books by their toilet will further entice them to put their new knowledge into practice.

Cancer

Have a friend's support

Quiet Cancer may feel nervous about using the toilet in the beginning, so having a playmate or older sibling sit beside them or even show them how it's done will do a lot to boost their confidence. Since Cancer children want to fit in with the crowd, they're more likely to use the potty when they see others doing the same.

Leo

Make a progress chart

Leo thrives on accomplishing their goals. Even as children, nothing thrills Leo more than watching their progress on a calendar or chart. All you need is a piece of paper and a marker or stickers to document each time your lion child successfully uses the toilet. The sense of achievement will encourage them to keep going.

Virgo

Don't watch

Virgo children really love privacy. Allowing a Virgo child to do their business without staring at them will increase their confidence and make going on the toilet a less stressful experience. Make sure to remain calm throughout potty training. Stress is a surefire way to make a Virgo child recoil from potty training.

Libra

Let them take the lead

Libra children may want to potty train earlier than most kids, especially if they have older siblings already using the toilet. It's important that these children direct their own potty training and have parents assist them only when required. Allow your Libra child to place their potty chair wherever they like and tell you when they're ready to go. They're acutely aware of their own bodies and won't have a hard time recognizing the urge to use the toilet.

Play relaxing music

Timid Scorpio children may be overly anxious about potty training, and will pick up on any frustration their parents display. Create a potty oasis by making their bathroom comfortable, with low lights and soft music playing. This meditative approach to toilet training will help relax Scorpio and take away the pressure to perform that can actually keep them from going on the potty.

Sagittarius

Make it fun

Good luck getting your Sagittarius kid to slow down long enough to use the potty. This always-on-the-go sign has no patience for pooping and will be happy to let you keep changing them (as long as you do it quickly, because they hate the feeling of a dirty diaper), especially if it means they are free to explore. To hold their attention, turn potty time into a fun game to keep them engaged and laughing, which will encourage them to come back to the toilet the next time the urge strikes.

Capricorn

December 22 – January 19

Provide big kid underwear

Capricorn kids love being treated like big kids. Parents can use this to their advantage by supplying their goat child with a wide variety of underpants to celebrate their transition to the toilet. Allow your Capricorn to pick out the styles they like, and each week add a few new pairs to the pile. These children will love wearing what big kids wear and will try their hardest to not have an accident in them.

Aquarius

January 20 – February 18

Potty train their favorite toy

Aquarius children will love taking part in teaching their favorite doll or stuffed animal how to use the potty. Children born under this sign are natural helpers and will feel empowered by showing their pals how to potty, even before they themselves have mastered it. Once they've successfully taught their toys, they'll likely be ready to use the potty on their own, too.

Shower them with praise

These sensitive children may resist change, and it will take a lot of coaching and encouragement to build their confidence to use the potty. Make sure that toilet time is filled with compliments, high-fives and smiles to motivate your tenderhearted Pisces to keep going, even if it's strange or a bit overwhelming.
