The belly button, or umbilicus, is the remnant of the umbilical cord, and it heals as a small scar from birth into adulthood, according to Dr. Allison Hill, a Los Angeles-based obstetrician and gynecologist. “When she's pregnant, the pressure from the baby pushes on the scar, and it can protrude out or flatten completely,” she says. According to Hill, the outie belly button will usually go back to its normal shape following delivery, which eliminates the pressure.
