20 Biblical Baby Names We Don’t Hear Every Day

If you want to name your new baby something inspired by your faith, but don't want to go with typical biblical baby names like Noah and Sarah, don't fret. There are an abundance of less common and much more interesting names that appear throughout the Holy Bible to consider for your new bundle of joy. Not only that, but there are some really pretty words with powerful meanings that can be found in the Bible as well.

There are around 800,000 words in the "Good Book," and tons of people are mentioned by name in its pages, so suffice it to say, there is no shortage of biblical names to choose from. You might just have to dig a bit deeper into the text to find what you're looking for when it comes to a name for your baby that's not as common. Here, we'll get you started with some not-so-typical biblical baby names.

Azriel

Azriel is an absolutely gorgeous and gender-neutral baby name that anyone would be proud to have. It actually means "God's help" or "help of God," in Hebrew, which is incredibly special and so inspiring.

Abel

Although the name Abel has picked up a bit in popularity in the past decade or so, it's still a far less common name to hear than many. Most of us of course, know the biblical story of Cain and Abel and that Abel was the favored brother. The word actually means "breath" in Hebrew.

Elon

You probably associate the name Elon with Tesla founder, Elon Musk, but the name actually comes from the Bible. In the Old Testament, Elon was a judge in Israel and the name is said to mean "oak tree," in Hebrew.

Ariel

Who doesn't love the name Ariel? It's beautiful, but did you know it's biblical too? It appears in the Old Testament and is said to mean "lion of God," in Hebrew. And you thought it was just the Little Mermaid!

Gaius

Talk about unique! Gaius is a super-strong sounding name that has biblical roots. In the Latin language, it means "I am glad," and in Welsh, it means "rejoicer." Either translation is pretty sweet for a name.

Sapphira

Sapphira as you may have guessed, means gem or jewel in Hebrew. In the Bible, Sapphira got herself in some trouble with God, but it's still a really pretty name. It's believed to indicate something precious or beautiful.

Junia

Have a June baby on the way? If it's a girl, Junia, would be a really pretty name choice. In the Bible, Junia was a Jewish Christian in Rome mentioned by St. Paul in the New Testament. It's believed that she was actually a female apostle. It means "born in June" in Latin, but also refers to a mythological Roman god.

Talitha

In the Bible, Talitha was what Jesus called a young girl he himself healed. It's a lovely name that simply means "little girl" in Hebrew. Interestingly, it's also a major star in the Ursa Major constellation.

Cephas

Cephas is a very unique name for a little boy. You're not likely to ever encounter another child with the name. It means "rock" in Aramaic, and it's a word Jesus used in reference to his apostle, Simon.

Zuriel

Zuriel is a lovely, rather old-fashioned sounding name that actually comes from the Old Testament. It means "God is my rock," in Hebrew, which would be a wonderful life-long reminder for your little one.

Aquila

Aquila is the Latin word for eagle, which is super-cool, but it's also a name that appears in the New Testament. It, too, is associated with a constellation of stars which are shaped like an eagle.

Lazarus

Lazarus is undeniably a strong name. In the Bible, Jesus raises a man named Lazarus from the dead in order to demonstrate to people what would happen to him on Easter. We'd say that's pretty important.

Adlai

Adlai is a name that sounds just as powerful as it's meaning. The word means "God is just" in Hebrew, and it appears as a name in the Bible on more than one occasion. You may also recall it as being the name of American politician, Adlai Stevenson, who helped found the United Nations.

Omri

Omri is a really interesting and unconventional name that works for a baby boy or girl. It means "my sheaf" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament, it is mentioned as the name of a king of Israel.

Aram

Aram is a name that just flows so nicely, which is probably why it's popular in Armenia. Oh, and also beacuse it means "excellence" in Armenian. It means "high elevated" in Hebrew, which is how it's used in the Bible.

Hosea

Hosea is a truly pleasant sounding name that means "salvation," in Hebrew, which is pretty awesome if you ask us. It can also work for a boy or a girl. Hosea is actually the name of the person who wrote the book in the Bible of the same name.

Kenan

If you think the biblical names Noah and Adam are overused, consider Kenan instead. It's a name that is believed to have belonged to the great-grandson of Adam and a direct ancestor of Noah. The name is mentioned in the book of Genesis.

Lael
