Let’s be real: The first trimester is plain ol’ rough. If you’re there right now, I’m so sorry! I promise, it’s going to get better. Soon the second trimester will arrive, and day by day you’ll begin to see how truly amazing you can feel during pregnancy.
Now, things don’t magically become rainbows and unicorns at the beginning of week 13. Often it is a slow progression of feeling better and more like yourself, plus a bump!
Having done this whole pregnancy thing many times now, I’ve fallen in love with the second trimester. It’s honestly one of my favorite seasons of life and a time I will always cherish. Curious as to why? Here are a few things that make the second trimester the very best…
Hello, baby bump!
The first trimester is tricky — you kind of look pregnant, but you kind of look like you just enjoyed a giant burrito, too. But once the second trimester arrives, your bump pops and soon it’s obvious to everyone there’s a baby cooking in there. Yay!
A wardrobe update
With the appearance of a true bump you’ve earned yourself a bona fide wardrobe update. Start with the basics: a quality pair of leggings, denim, a comfy dress or two, and a few tops. Don’t forget maternity underwear — it really is the best!
Goodbye, nausea
For most mamas, morning sickness wanes with the arrival of the first trimester. Hallelujah! Now it’s time to…
Eat all the things
My pregnancy cravings always strike during my second trimester. As frustrating as it can be to need one particular thing at random times, it’s also the most satisfying feeling to finally get that strawberry licorice, gyro, or ice cold lemonade.
Embrace that glow
You know the pregnancy glow so many speak of? Mine tends to arrive with the second trimester. Perhaps it’s the shift in hormones or the fact that the smell of cooking food no longer makes me want to vomit. Whatever it is, my selfies look better and I usually hear a few “You’re glowing!” comments from friends during this time — you know, before the third trimester swelling begins.
Build that nest
I love the second trimester most of all because I catch a major nesting bug. It becomes my goal in life to organize all the things. Like, I just ordered bin labels for my kids’ toys, and I asked my husband to pull out our oven so I could sweep behind it. My house has never been happier that I’m in major baby prep mode.
You get to be sappy and sentimental
Baby kicks are strong in the second trimester, and all the dreams of your little one begin to take shape. I cry happy tears often and generally feel so blessed to be preparing to welcome a new family member.
It's time to celebrate baby
Usually toward the end of the second trimester is when you have a baby shower or two. And, let’s face it, there is nothing better than gathering with family and friends, even over Zoom, to celebrate a new baby. The countdown is officially on!
